Notes for Russell Jeffrey Kroum:
Russ Kroum, son of Charles and Maclovia (Caldwell) Kroum was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and traveled with his parents throughout the country stopping in various states for a period of time due to his father's occupation in the U.S. Air Force. At age six, the family moved to Adana, Turkey for a two year stay. This is where Russ's youngest brother was born. Russ's father's last duty station was in Klamath Falls, Oregon where he retired and the family promptly moved up to Washington State. From 1964 to 1966 the family stayed in Yakima, Washington and then moved to Walla Walla.
As a young man, Russ would earn money working in the onion fields topping and boxing onions. Pay at that time was 8 cents a box. He also worked as a dishwasher and fry cook while attending high school.
Russ met his wife Lynn while attending Walla Walla High School. They were married at a young age, he being 17 and she 18. Russ opted to join the navy rather than finish high school. Russ's first duty station was the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Hancock. Later, his primary duties in the navy were that of a diver with a coastal river division (small gun boats). He also was the divisions small arms instructor and range master. Russ left the navy as a Petty Officer Second Class.
While in the navy, Russ apprenticed as a cabinetmaker during the evening hours and earned his journey-man status upon his separation from the navy. Russ worked as a cabinetmaker and carpenter for two years following his service time. In April of 1979 he tested and was hired by the Walla Walla Fire Department. Two years later, he acquired his paramedic certification and worked as a paramedic for the department. Extremely active in the local union, he negotiated the union contracts between his union (IAFF # 404) and the city of Walla Walla for many years. Russ also became known as the department historian, researching department history and acquiring fire memorabilia for the department.
Russ's hobbies included windsurfing and woodcarving. Russ enjoyed working with wood and especially making items out of wood enjoyed by his family and friends. He spent many hours in his wood shop.
Through the course of his marriage to Lynn, they had two sons. Ryan James was born Jan 17, 1978 and Randy Jay was born April 27, 1980.
Russ was known as an individual who became involved in all of his families activities. He coached both sons in basketball and soccer. He encouraged both sons to engage in music and both became proficient musicians even though Russ could not play an instrument or read music.

Notes for Margaret Lynn Bristol:
Margaret "Lynn" Bristol, daughter of Harold and Wilma (Yelliott) Bristol, was born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. Lynn grew up in the town of Walla Walla, attending Berney elementary school, Pioneer Junior High, and Walla Walla High School. Her primary interests in school were music and the JROTC program. From the age of 10, until she was 17 years old, Lynn worked for her father at his Texaco Service Station during the summers. Also, she caddied for him on the golf course during the weekends. She grew up in the Central Christian Church but eventually attended several other churches in the community. While in high school, Lynn worked at the local State Farm Insurance office.
At the age of 18 she married Russ Kroum at the Central Christian Church. She traveled with him to his duty stations (including San Diego, Alameda, and Vallejo, California) when he was in the service and eventually settled with him back in Walla Walla, WA. While in California, (Vallejo) Lynn and Russ bought their first home. Lynn worked several jobs during this time including working at jewelry stores, managing a Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream store for the U.S. Navy Exchange, and owned and operated an antique store in Crockett, California. When her children (Ryan and Randy) were young, she worked at a local bank as first a teller and later in new accounts and as a secretary. Lynn later chose to stay at home and raise her two boys, the most important job ever!
Lynn continued her interest in music throughout her life, singing in a local choral group and in her church choir. Lynn projected that interest of music to her two sons, who both became very proficient musicians and singers. Lynn also spent much of her time in projects for her church, usually attending to those tasks others were relunctant to undertake.
Lynn's favorite hobby was painting. She would paint in several forms, (acrylics, oil, watercolors) and she especially liked painting faces of young people as can be evidenced by her many pieces of her artwork. Lynn's husband taught her how to use the lathe and she eventually did custom lathe work for people in the community. One of Lynn's favorite activities is walking her dog, a Giant Schnauzer. Lynn also enjoys quilting, collecting Hummel's (small porcelain figurines), and antiquing.

Ryan was a member of the YMCA swimming team until the age of 15. In high school Ryan played the clarinet and bass clarinet for the school band and was active in school politics serving as a commissioner on the ASB. He was also extremely active in his church. Ryan attended the Nazarene Church Camp in Pinelow, Washington for seven years. Throughout high school and the summer breaks, Ryan worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at the YMCA. Ryan's most time consuming activity in high school was the JROTC program. He served as an officer in charge of logistics during his senior year. While in JROTC, Ryan was a member of the Rifle Team, Drill Team, and Color Guard.
While in high school, Ryan suffered from spinal meningitis secondary to a bicycle accident. Following four neurosurgeries (two in Walla Walla and two in Seattle at the Children's Hospital) over seven months he fully recovered. This was remarkable in that 70% of all children contracting bacterial meningitis at this time did not survive. A true testimony to power of prayer. It seemed as though the entire community of Walla Walla was praying for him at this time.
Upon graduation from high school (Ryan was the first male in his direct family line for four generations to complete high school), Ryan attended Walla Walla Community College for two years, graduating with his Associate Degree in General Studies. He won four small scholarships that assisted him with his costs. While attending school, Ryan worked three jobs simultaneously. He tutored math at the college, worked three hours per day at the Corps of Engineers as a student aide, and he continued to teach swimming at the YMCA. He also managed to squeeze in the occasional lifeguarding class that he was certified to teach at Whitman College.
