This home page focuses on the BARRON FAMILY and allied lines in early Wilkes, Greene, Hancock, Baldwin, Putnam, Jasper, Newton, Butts, Meriwether, Harris and Troup Counties in GA; in Tallapoosa, Coosa and Pike Counties, AL; and in Smith County, TX. You will find an article on the origin of the Barron family, another sorting and identifying early Barrons with the same given name, and a detailed research article tracing the allied Smith family, among others. There are also links to the Barron DNA Project and analysis of related Barrons. My ancestral line is traced to WILLIAM BARRON (1769-1848) and his wife, MARTHA SMITH (1770-aft. 1855). WILLIAM is believed to be the son of WILLIAM BARRON and PRUDENCE DAVIS of Wilkes County, GA. MARTHA was the daughter of JAMES and MARY (?) SMITH of Wilkes County, GA. Tradition indicates that WILLIAM and PRUDENCE DAVIS BARRON had at least four children, JOHN, ELIZABETH, SAMUEL and WILLIAM (Jr.). Most Barron researchers identify SAMUEL BARRON of Jones County, GA, as WILLIAM and PRUDENCE's son Samuel. However, there is strong evidence that their son SAMUEL actually was the man of that name who died in Hancock County, GA, in 1801. See link "Sorting men named John & Samuel Barron in early Georgia" below for discussion of this son. Also, evidence indicates that WILLIAM and PRUDENCE BARRON also had a daughter, PRUDENCE (?), who married JOHN SMITH, son of JAMES SMITH. Please see the link entitled "James Smith of Wilkes County, GA, and Allied Families" below for detailed information on this proposed daughter of WILLIAM and PRUDENCE DAVIS BARRON and her descendants. The children of WILLIAM BARRON and MARTHA SMITH were: JAMES, THOMAS, MARY ELIZABETH, HENRY, JOSEPH, SMITH and JOHN. Allied families are: DOSS, MARTIN, ROQUEMORE, STRICKLAND, EIDSON, HAYS, REEVES and FARR. Particular emphasis is given to the descendants and allied families of two of their sons, JOSEPH and SMITH, many of whose children migrated from GA through AL to Smith County, TX. Allied families of these men's children include: STANLEY, ROGERS, CROSS, SCOGIN/SCOGGINS, ADAMS, TUCKER, TOMLINSON, PEACOCK, DUDLEY AND REDDOCH. See "Descendants of William and Prudence Barron: Genealogy Report" below for an extensive listing of the descendants of JOSEPH and SMITH BARRON. The lines of WILLIAM and MARTHA SMITH BARRON's remaining children are covered in less detail. [The descendants of WILLIAM and PRUDENCE DAVIS BARRON's other known children are not addressed at this time, except for a listing in the Genealogy Report of children for SAMUEL BARRON and likely children of PRUDENCE (?) BARRON and JOHN SMITH.] Pictures of many of Joseph and Smith Barron's children can be found in the Family Photos section below. I do not have photos of several of Smith's children: Lovica Barron Scoggins, Jeremiah Barron or Emily Francis Barron Dudley. I would very much appreciate if anyone with pictures of these children would send copies to me. I would also be interested if anyone has different photos of Joseph and Smith Barron's children than those shown. Ongoing DNA testing has been an immeasurable help, connecting us to a Barron family that lived in County Down, N. Ireland, as early as 1713.We have not yet determined if our line is a part of this County Down family or just closely related. For more information, see the article, “The Tradition of Irish Heritage in the William and Prudence Barron Family” (link below) and the clan analysis for our Barron line at the Barron DNA Project website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barronfamily/Barron/clan2analysis.pdf. This information comes from many sources, including data from a number of Barron genealogists, as well as primary research. I extend a heartfelt thanks to all the folks who have shared their family information with me over the past 35+ years and encourage researchers to contact me with new info, as well as questions.
