Notes for JOHANN HEPLER:

His wife, Dorothea Heppler (spelled as such), was mentioned living 1641 in Binningen. Because of the destruction of many villages in the entire region by the French armies in 1693 and later, early church registers are lacking for Binningen. But from the reconstructed church register, put together in 1693 and later, it appears that Hans and Doreatha Heppler had two sons: Zacharias and Caspar.

Notes for JOHANN CASPER HEPLER, JR.:

The following was posted on the internet by Jack Paul:

                                               "JOHANN CASPER HEPLER - 1713 - 1769

The history of the Hepler-Heppler-Hoeppler-Hepler-Heabler family in America begins in 1748, when Casper Hoeppler, his wife Susanna and two small sons landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From 1682 to 1776 the province of Pennsylvania was the objective point of emigration from Germany, France and Switzerland. As early as 1727 the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania passed a resolution that the masters of the vessels importing Germans and others from Europe shall be examined whether they have permission to carry these people; that a list be taken of the emigrants, the place from which they came, their occupation and their reason for coming to America. Our emigrant Johann Casper Hepler was born July 10, 1713 and his wife Susanna Scheible December 18, 1718.

A writing was drawn up which each emigrant must sign in his own handwriting declaring allegiance and subjection to the King of Great Britain and fidelity to the Proprietary of the Province. These ship lists are published in the "Colonial Records" a "Rupps Immigrants" and the originals are preserved in the Library at Harrisburg.

It was early in 1748 when the Hoepplers - Casper, Susanna and their first born Jacob, and baby Christopher set sail on the ship Patience (John Browne, Master) from Rotterdam, Holland, for the New World. The passenger list of this boat shows Casper Hepler (Hoeppler) was the seventeenth person to sign the usual forms at Philadelphia Court House, on September 16, 1748.

Although documentation is lacking to connect the above immigrant with the early settler, the family historian relates that Upper Milford Township in Northampton County was his destination. This is approximately 30 miles north of Philadelphia, in the southern part of present day Lehigh Co., ten miles south of Allentown. The area is described:

The soils of the Milford is very productive and is well cultivated, which is the chief employment of the inhabitants. Milford are well-watered with the best and most wholesome water found in the Lehigh County or any county in Pennsylvania. The surface formation is very irregular, mountainous and hilly. In the southern part of Lower Milford is the Hosensack Hill or the great Mill Hill, commonly called "der Crosse Muehlberg." Although there are many acres of land untillable in the Milford these hills furnish fuel and timber... and are a great protection from destructive storms.

The decision to settle here was unlikely based on proximity to market, since Philadelphia was a two-day wagon journey away. Availability of land was an important factor; since this was still frontier, property was obtainable, and 115 acres was claimed. The German language predominance and the Lutheran religion established would be additional conditions favoring settlement in then Northampton County, an area of largely German inhabitants, thus lessening the cultural shock.

(In this area was a picture of the Dillingersville Zion Church which Casper and his family were members. The structure was built as a church and a school.)

As in many early communities, the local church was a significant binding element, and it is from the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Upper Milford (near Dillingersville) that the progress of the Hepler family is traced. The church was started about 1744. The church was abandoned about 1791. Member from this church formed the nucleus of the Lutheran Church at Zionsville.

In 1757 a new congregation was organized at the Second Upper Milford Lutheran Congregation. This is the church at Old Zionsville and the present church is a stately old edifice with a beautifully kept cemetery. While Casper is not mentioned as one the organizers, we find that he and his sons, Jacob and Christopher were communicants in 1765. The Reformed Church was also built in 1757. The church record book started at this time. The early history of the churches at Zionsville is somewhat confusing, but apparently there were separate Lutheran and Reformed church buildings from the beginning said to have been log structures until 1818. At that time the building had become old and unsatisfactory and the Lutheran congregation decided to erect the new church. A number of the Reformed families then left the Reformed congregation and joined the Lutherans in erecting a Union Church. The arrangement continued until 1871 at which time the Reformed members sold their interest in the building and rejoined the original Reformed Church.

The genealogist in looking up baptisms at Zionsville must therefore remember 4 places to examine records.

Dillingersville and Zionsville Lutheran Church records, Reformed that separated itself and the original Reformed record itself.

The church records document at communion services, and the 1754, 1755, 1766, and 1757 rosters show Casper and Susanna Hepler (spelled Hopfeler, Hepper, Heppeler or Hoebler) present. One newborn son is mentioned --- Michael Hepler (spelled Hoppler), born January 2, 1757 and baptized March 6, 1757, sponsored by Michael Scheible and wife Barbara. Although Casper Hepler's name is listed in 1758 and 1760, the name of Susanna Hepler is no longer found after 1757 and it is presumed she died about that

time.

This era of six years of peace and plenty was rudely broken when in 1755 General Braddock was defeated by the French and Indians in Western Pennsylvania. The red man immediately appeared in small groups in different sections of the settlements and began a murderous warfare against the unsuspecting settlers. A report in 12-11-1755 states that 200 hostile Indians were roaming about the plantations killing settlers, and burning down their houses. Such were the trials, tribulations and dangers the first families of settlers experienced in the new land, and in the midst of them was Casper Hepler with his growing family, now consisting of his wife and four children, Jacob, Christopher, Casper and George.

In 1758 Susanna Hepler no longer appears. Se probably died about this time and Casper re-married about 1762 to Anna Mary who survived him, and is mentioned in his will.

The hardships of twenty years pioneer life told on Casper Hepler and on April 29, 1769, he made his last will and testament. When he died is not known but the will was probated August 1, 1769, at Easton, Pa. He was only fifty- seven years old. His estate was left to his wife Anna Mary as long as she remained his widow: at her death to his sons; Jacob, two fifths, Christopher, Casper Jr. and George, each one-fifth. He also willed to the overseers of the Lutheran Church of Upper Milford, presumably the church at Zionsville - twenty shillings, which gives us a good idea of his character and integrity. Twenty shillings seems a small sum now, but then 300 acres of land could be bought for that sum. His burial place, though urgently sought, has never been found, but it is most likely at Zionsville. All the old stones have been removed as they were illegible.

Casper Hepler was a weaver of cloth and worked at his trade. Ms farm which he acquired in 1753 was fanned by Michael Scheible, probably his brother-in-law. Anna Mary died about 1771 for it was then that the venue of personal property was held and final account filed.

Jacob the oldest son sold his two-fifth portion of the home farm to his brother Christopher, who in turn sold his share and the two shares he bought from brother Jacob to Casper. Jacob bought land in Luzerne County. Later Jacob relocated to Armstrong County, Pa. The youngest brother George sold his one-fifth to Casper and established a home in Whitehall Township. Christopher settled in North Carolina.

                                                          THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION

In 1775 Old Man Mars again looms up in the shape of Great Britain in its last and final efforts to subdue the spirits of the colonists. At once the four sons of Casper: Jacob, Christopher, Casper Jr. and George left their families of very young child to fight for their freedom against the British.

Jacob at once joined the regiment under Colonel Seigfried at Bethlehem, Pa. This outfit was part of General Israel Putman's Brigade, the man who made famous the saying "Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes." Casper joined Colonel Kooken's Company, Second Battalion, Northampton County, Pa. and George Hepler in the Sixth Battalion, under Captain Jacob Peterman.

Again in the Militia Rolls of 1785 appear the names of Casper Hepler, Jacob Hepler and Stoffel Hepler.

Following the war Jacob sold his two-fifth portion to his brother Christopher, and bought land in Luzerne County. He lived there for sometime, later moving and buying a farm in Armstrong County, Pa. There are thousands of Heplers living there today.

In 1785 Christopher sold out his portion of the farm to Casper Jr. Christopher took his young family and moved to North Carolina and settled in what was then Rowan County, now Davies. They traveled in large Conestoga wagons.

Casper Jr. bought his brother Christopher's portion of the farm in 1785. He, his wife Anna Maria and their children lived there. December 9, 1795 he sold his farm to Balthaser Shultz. Casper set out in a north westerly direction to Northampton County, now Lehigh County, Pa.

DAR records claim that George died in the war. His family at that time was living in Whitehall Township, then Northampton County now Leigh County , Pa.

The Heplers were a very religious family and after the long trip to America aboard the ship Patience, and the long trip from Philadelphia to Northampton County, I'm sure they prayed to God to give thanks for their safe journey.

Jack Paul's Source was: The Hepler Family History, by Avice Hepler Morgan. First Edition, Gateway Press Inc., Baltimore, 1986."

According to David C. Becker on internet 12/13/1995, Heplers were from Vailhingen on the Enz in South Germany and listed Casper's name as Johann Casper Hepler. Minnie Hepler said Christopher Hepler I died, was buried at sea on his way to America. Christopher was Casper's brother. She also said Jacob played and attended school with his cousins.

HEPLER NAME AND CREST

The name Hepler (Heppler, Heppeler, Hoeppler, etc.) is a typically Swabian name and is found in many communities in Wurtemberg, Germany, from Stuttgart - the capital city, to remote villages. It appears to be one of those surnames derived in the Middle Ages, when families took permanent family names, from an occupation. There are several theories on the meaning of the name. The most generally accepted explanation is that it derives from the word Hepe, Heppe, or Hippe, a garden knife used to prune the trees, a small sickle, or, appropriate for Wurtemberg, a curved vineyardist's knife used in trimming grapevines in the wine country and in cutting grapes in the vintage time. A Heppler, or Heppeler was, therefore, a person who used such a knife. (Sources: Rudolph Zoder, Familiesnamen in Ostalen, 2 vols. and George Olms Verlagsbuchhandlung, 196, Vol. I. 722, 750.)

Similar names, such as Hoebler, Hebler, and Haebler, apparently come from other roots and, therefore, probably have no connection with our family, although for a time in the 19th Century our Manhantongo Heplers were accustomed to spell their name in German as Hebler. The similar but unrelated surnames Heb(e)ler and Haebler are said to mean "baker," from the Middle High German word Hebel or Hevel - meaning yeast. (Source: Hans Bahlow, Deutsches Namenlexikon: Failien-und Vornamen nach Ursprung und Sinn erklaert (Munich: Keyserche Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1967) p. 215. The same author calls Heppler a South German surname, meaning a vinedresser or vineyardist, from the Middle High German hepe, heppe, happe, a curved vineyardist's knife (p. 229).

A second theory, suggested by the Swabian Dialect Dictionary, traces names beginning with the initial sound Hepp, such as Hepper and Heppeler, at least in part, not to the vineyard but to the Old-German personal names Hadu-brecht or Hadu-brand. (Source: Schwaebisches Woerterbuch, column 1434).

Just for the sake of the record, among the other theories on the etymology of our name is the curious one I (John Paul) found one time in a book of surnames of the City of Frankfurt (Germany) on the Main. This informs us that Heppeler so spelled, means "ein Uebereilter Mensch, i.e., a person who is too much in a hurry, or a person who acts rashly or precipitately. Unfortunately for this theory, I (John Paul) have never known any of our family to fit this description. Most of the older Heplers whom I (John Paul) remember from Mahantogo were deliberate and unhasty, characterized by what one might call a Swabian or Pennsylvanian deliberation.

The latest of the major dictionaries of German surnames derives Hepp(e)ler from the Swabian dialect verb haeppeln, meaning to act rashly; the name appears as Haepler an Hoeppeler. The surname Hoeppler or derives according to this source from the Middle High German verb hoppeln to walk with a hop or skip. And lastly, the similar name Hippler comes from Middle High German Hippe meaning a "waffle," hence Hippler means a waffle-maker. All this is conjectural, since the same source relates the surnames Hipper, Hepper, and Hippenmacher to Middle High German Heppe, later Hippe, meaning the crooked vineyard knife with which we began our discussion. Who knows after so many centuries? Source: Joseph Karlman Brechenmacher, Etymologisches Woerterbuch der Deutschen Familiennamen, 2nd Ed. (Limburg/Lahn: C. A. Starke Verlag, 1957), I. 700, 721, 740."

HEPPE: In the scrapbook of this Family Tree Maker file is a graphic of Heppe (for which Heplers were named), a middle ages tool used by vineyard workers to prune the vines. The person proficient in its use were referred to as Heppeler. Thus, the origin of the name Hepler. This particular representation was copied from an insignia found in the German town of Vaihingen/Enz, home of our immigrant ancestors Caspar Hepler and his wife, Susanna Scheible Hepler. From this historic name near Stuttgart they came to America in 1748 with their two sons: Jacob - age 4 and Christopher - age 2. Subsequently, Caspar, Jr. and George were born of this union in America. It was an arduous journey, two and half centuries ago, and because of it, Heplers come together each year in Pitman, Pennsylvania, to contemplate, celebrate and pay homage to these courageous early settlers who gave birth to our vast nation. (Based on information in John Paul's internet site).

CHURCH RECORDS: As in many early communities, the local church was a significant binding element, and it is from the records of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation of Upper Milford (Near Dillingersville) that the progress of the Hepler family is traced. Kevin Costner's (movie star) immigrant ancestor was on the ship with our immigrant ancestor.

The Patience passenger ship, which Johann and Susanna Scheible crossed the Atlantic to come to America, was densely packed, with little space, often with poor food and bad water. Under such conditions, disease was a commonplace. In 1748, when our ancestors crossed, the ship carried 122 men over 16; total passengers not given. It was a three-masted ship which made annual runs to Philadelphia, had 8 guns, and a crew of 16. Upon arrival in Philadelphia, males over the age of 16 were taken to City Hall for the oath of allegiance, then led back to the ship. Those who had their passage money, or could borrow it, were released. Buyers bargained with passengers for a stated period of service, and paid the merchant the passage money and any other debts. Families were often divided on arrival, as children were "sold" to pay the family's passage.

Passengers with the Hepler family wre: Adam Kastner (descendant is Adam Costner, movie star); Bartholomew Scheible and Casper Scheible, who were relatives of Susanna Scheible).

Notes for SUSANNA SCHEIBLE:

Emigrated to Pa. in 1748. Sponsors at her baptism were Hanns Jerg Boger and Agnes his wife, in place of Samuel Hecker, son of the miller;and Maria Barbara, daughter of Sebastian Schmid. Susanna was confirmed in the church at Lomersheim in 1733.

Susanna is not listed in church records after 1757 and it is presumed she died about this time.

                                            "CHRISTOPHER HEPLER 1746 - 1816

Born in Germany. He along with his brothers Jacob, Casper & George let his large family of small children to fight in the War of the Revolution in Captain Kooken's company. In 1769 when his father died Jacob sold his 2 shares to Christopher, who in turn sold his share and Jacob's two shares to his brother Casper Jr. and moved to Thomasville, NC, Rowan County, now Davies County. Some of their children were born in Pennsylvania and the rest were born in North Carolina.

According to the records Christopher was the first Hepler to settle in North Carolina. He bought 500 acres on Hanby's and Abbots Creek near the place where Emanuel Church now stands. The family were Lutherans when they arrived in Pa. We have no idea where they worshiped in NC. Have no idea where the burial place for these pioneers is. Since their last sale of land in Pa. took place in 1787, they probably settled in NC about 1788. Loading their families and goods into the large Conestoga wagon they set out. How long did it take them to get there? Daniel Boone whose homestead is a shrine given over to Boy Scout activities is within 25 miles of the original Hepler home. History tells us that between 1774-1790 more than 70,000 people traveled over the warrior's path, the Christopher Hepler family among them, They arrived in time to be counted in the 1790 census. Catherine was probably the daughter of Henry Hertzel. His land bordered Casper's farm."

Notes for DANIEL HEPLER:

Migrated to Carroll Co., OH in 1823., then to Stark Co., OH, from PA. Daniel purchased land from the gov't in OH, which he cleared and developed. His widow moved to Kosciusko Co., IN, with certain members of the family, living there till her death. Avice Morgan said there were conflicting death dates: 1849 and 1861. Family in IN had dates as 1772-1861.

Concerned about these children... Had John D. Married to Catherine Bortz.

but John D. is the son of Daniel and Catherine Kline.

Notes for CATHERINE KLINE:

Descendants in IN had her dates as 1784-1859; Avice Morgan had 1794-1849. It is unlikely she would have been 22 years younger than her husband, especially in a first marriage, so the IN dates are likely more accurate.

Children of DANIEL HEPLER and CATHERINE KLINE are:

                   i.    BARBARA8 HEPLER, m. MILL.

                  ii.    CASPER HEPLER.

                iii.    CATHERINE HEPLER.

She died 1864. He married (2) ELIZABETH YOCKEY. She died 1869. He married (3) MARY POLLINS. She was born Mar 08, 1781, and died Aug 08, 1842.

Notes for JACOB HEPLER, JR.:

Settled Scott Township, Kosciusko Co., IN, with brother Casper and Jacob and Henry Yocky. Mamie Kuhn's cousin had death date as 1864. Avice Morgan had Jacob and his first wife dying on the same date and yet he remarried after his first wife died. Her death date for him is obviously in error.

Notes for MARY POLLINS:

Cemetery is at a Reformed Church, Old White Church, Sugar Creek, Armstrong Co., PA. Under the same tree is Samuel Campbell (7th Gen.), his sons Samuel and Bobby (8th Gen.). They are nephews of Minnie M. Hepler, descendant of Casper Hepler I and the three Jacob Heplers and Samuel Hepler.

He married MAGDALENA UNKNOWN. She was born 1782, and died Bet. 1819 - 1855 in Scott Township, Kosciusko Co., IN.

Notes for CASPER HEPLER:

In Fall of 1837, Casper Hepler and family, Jacob and Henry Yocky, and son Jacob Hepler settled Scott Township. They were first to erect cabins. Grave stone was read in Kos. Co. as his being born 1782. Avice Morgan had his birth date as 1785/87.

[nighthar.fbk.FTW]

August 1998 - Willard Hepler, Nappanee, Indiana, keeper of Cemetery Book and Records shows birth date of Casper Hepler as January 21, 1787 and date of death as March 30, 1855, age 68 yrs, 2 months and 10 days. No stone was seen for Magdalena.

Notes for MAGDALENA UNKNOWN:

Her maiden name may be Yocky. Death date in Hepler History/Morgan was 1819 which was wrong. Kos. Co. Cem. Records has a Magdalene Hepler (same year of birth) who died in 1849. Avice Morgan had her dates as birth date 1782/89 and death date as 1819.

[nighthar.fbk.FTW]

Conflicting dates as to when she died - one source shows a 1819 date, which is probably not right, as some of her children were were born after the 1819 date.

According the Avice Hepler Morgan, The town of Hepler, Kansas, was plotted and chartered by Dr. B. F. Hepler of Ft. Scott, KS, in 1871. In 1870 Dr. Hepler was asked to let the new town use his name as the name of the town. It was hoped by all that the new town of Hepler would be as lively, stirring and entertaining as the gentleman from which it took its name. No man has left a more enduring character behind in Bourbon Co., Kansas, since the early days of toil and struggle when Ft. Scott was struggling toward future destinies. He was interested in every development of medical and educational progress. His warm-hearted charity made him an earnest sympathizer with everyone whom he could assist. Dr. Ben served Kansas Militia in the Civil War in the Union Army. He was Assistant Surgeon in the 24th Reg. Mary, his second wife, was the first Grand Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in the State of Kansas.

Article from History of Kansas, Bourbon County: "Benjamin F. Hepler, M.D., was born in Pennsylvania; emigrated to Missouri in the winter of 1858, and established himself as physician and surgeon at Nevada, MO, remaining there during the beginning of the war (Civil), the hostilities of which were the mitigating cause of his removing to Ft. Scott, KS, in 1863, and opening a drug store. In 1864, he became assistant surgeon of the 24th Kansas State Militia, Col. Isaac Stadden commanding. , which was called into active service during the Price raid. The Doctor, possessing a social, enthusiastic spirit and genial nature, was soon acknowledged a necessary acquisition in business relations. He not only assumed his professional duties, but identified himself with most of the public enterprises of the city, often receiving the seat of honor. The first feature seemed to be an educational demand, as no feasible Free School System had as yet been established; and in 1864, he, with others, organized School Board, and eventually succeeded in maintaining literary advantages, and today (date written unknown) he lives to see the public schools of Fort Scott "living monuments of honor." He has been ever since 1865 prominently connected with the variety of railroad interests of the State (Kansas), being one of the originators, and always one of the directors of the railroad chartered as the Tebo & Neosho Railroad Company in the State of Missouri. The "Nevada Times" of Nevada, MO, in one of its issues in 1869, in speaking of him in connection with this enterprise, called him the "Headlight of the Scott and Sante Fe Railroad Company, with a view of ultimately merging the two roads into one, and to further this enterprise, a treaty was conceived and arranged with the Big and Little Osage tribes of Indians, which treaty was held in May and June of 1868, at the mouth of Drum Creek, on the Verdigris River, where the town of Independence, Montgomery Company, now is; he and others connected with the directory of the two railroads, met with the Secretary of the Interior with their commissioners appointed by the President of the United States, at the time and places appointed to treat with the aforesaid tribes for a body of land involving 13,000 acres, then known as the "Osage Indian Reservation," to secure a landed franchise of the Land Grant Railway and Trust Company of New York City, Levi G. Parsons, President, R. S. Stevens General Manager, and through whose management the road was built under the name of Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. He was also connected with the Memphis, Topeka and Fort Scott narrow gauge Railroad, organized in 1870 and the Leclede and Fort Scott and still is a director of that road, also a member of the executive committee. He holds the position at the present time of assistant surgeon of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, and the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf Division, also chief surgeon of the St. Louis, Fort Scott and Wichita Railroad Company. The Bourbon County Agricultural Horticultural and Mechanical Society was organized in 1865 and in 1871 he was elected President of that Society, and at the same time was made President of the Kansas and Missouri District Fair Association, organized in 1871. At an early day he became identified as one of the proprietors of the Fort Scott Paint and Cement Works, in the manufacturing of hydraulic cement, and in July, 1872, became general Supt., and sold out his interest in 1876. In 1871, he with others, organized a Town Stock Company in Crawford Company 20 miles southwest of the line of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway, of which he was elected President, and in honor of its President, they named the town "Hepler." He was one of the instigators and assisted in organizing the District Medical Society known as the Southeast Kansas District Medical Society in 1879, with G. R. Balwin, M.D., President; F. F. Dickman, Secretary, and in 1830 he himself was elected President of this society, and in 1881 he became one of the proprietors of the "Kansas Medical Index," F. F. Dickman, M.D., editor. For a series of year he did very little in a professional way, and in 1876 he resumed the practice of medicine, since which time he was very actively devoted to the interests of his profession, still holding some land and mining interests in the suburbs of the city and adjoining counties. Thus we see in point of labor he has been one of the happy mediums through the populace of the great State of Kansas have been able to prove by united efforts to their posterity the magnitude of advancement and improvement."
