Baptist Civil War Private Co. D-15th Iowa Vol. Infintry Enrolled Jan 20, 1862, at Ottumwa, Iowa to serve 3 years. Roll for Jan 8 1864 reports him left sick in Camp Vicksburg. Feb 2, 1864, by order G Gibbon, M.O. Roll dated July 24, 1865 reports him sent to Chattanooga, Tenn Nov 10, 1864, to be mustered out of service no discharge furnished on our muster out of organizations. No I.M.O. roll on file. There is no Cert. of disability on file in this office. Report from Commissioner of pensions, Washington D.C.
Statement of Elijah Hoover: He first contracted the disease of the lower left jaw in the month of January 1864. Preceding the said disease he had been exposed with rain and snow storms. His regiment had marched from Iuka, Miss. to Corinth, Tenn through the rain and laid in camp that night after the days march without any thing over him or with any fire as the command was at the Battle of Corinth, Tenn which commenced next morning before breakfast and from that time on he commenced to get worse and could not eat any thing such as Army food and he was sent to Hospital at Quincy, Ill, he remained about two months and then he was sent to the hospital at Nashville, Tenn. He was there for four months. He was ordered to report to his Reginment and was sent to Davenport, Iowa where he was granted a leave of absence to return home on account of disability from said disease. Discharged January 19, 1865. He remained at home until his discharge was sent to him at Ottumwa, Iowa.[Steven Kuhns Part.FTW]
