Kuiper Genealogy Website

Updated November 20, 2008

Welcome to the Kuiper Family Website. My name is Al Kuiper and I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

I am a first generation naturalized Dutch-Canadian, whose family immigrated from The Netherlands in 1958. I have recently become interested in genealogy since a Dutch uncle of mine sent me the results of a family history search he performed in The Netherlands. The furthest back that his search was able to take him was 1705, when the earliest known ancestor of the Kuiper lineage, Wigbolt Lamberts, married Sijske Berents in Muntendam, in the province of Groningen, The Netherlands. Here he ran into a roadblock, since he could not locate Wigbolt's birth record.

Before 1811, name searches were difficult to do. Children got their surname from their father's first name. Some of the children got their first names from their mother's surname. If you're confused, then so was Napoleon Bonaparte, who was the ruler of Holland about 1800 when a census was being done. He decided that families should pick a permanent surname and pass it down to their children to use as their surname, rather than the first name. Most families picked either their occupation or the locality where they lived as their surname. If you're interested in Dutch surname conventions, you can find more information about the Napoleonic Decree by clicking here. The Kuiper family at that time was in the barrel making business, so Engel Lammerts changed his name to Engel Lammerts Kuiper. His seven children all kept the Kuiper surname.

There are a number of variations on the spelling of Kuiper, including Kuipers, Kuyper(s), Kuijper(s), Cuyper(s) and Cuijper(s). Some of Wigbolt Lambert's descendants may have changed the spelling of their surname, so present day families with these surnames may be related together. My ancestors lived in Muntendam, Winschoten and the city of Groningen in northern Holland until 1946, when my father, Menno Willem Kuiper married Jacoba Catharina van de Wal and moved to 's Hertogenbosch in Noord Brabant. Then in 1958, with five children, he moved his family to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

I hope that this website is of some help to those searching for ancestors with the Kuiper surname. If you find that there is a connection between your and our family trees, please do not hesitate to contact me at akuiper@magma.ca.
