Notes for Ann HINCHCLIFF:

                        ANN HINCHCLIFF HADLOCK

Ann Hinchcliff was the seventh and youngest of Elijah and Hannah Field Hinchcliff's children. She was born on August 21, 1830, in Cumberworth, Lancashier, England. Her family was very poor and Ann worked in the cotton mills when a child. She received no education. In later years she taught herself how to print, but never seemed to master writing. She married unsuccessfully in England. By this union she had a son, Wilford.

In the spring of 1850, the Hinchcliff family left England and came to the United States. Ann came with them, bringing her two-month-old son. They were on the sea nine weeks, before landing in New York. On account of a strike in Troy, Elijah, the father, went to Philadelphia to find work, where he died. It was three weeks before the family knew of his death.

It took four years for Ann and her sister Edna to save enough money to continue on to Utah. In early spring of 1854, they, together with Edna's three children, left Albany, New York. Ann left her son with her mother. They had purchased an oxen team, wagon and provisions and left in a Captain Brown's wagon train. Ann drove all the way as Edna was quite ill most of the way.

Oren Alton Hadlock was born April 11, 1826, in Orleans County, Vermont, and was one of ten children born to Steven and Sally Alton Hadlock. His family had accepted Mormonism and in time started to join the Latter-Day-Saints in the west. They settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where his father became ill and died there September 8, 1846.

In the summer of 1848, nine of the family migrated to Utah, leaving two sisters, Lucretia and Persina. This family settled in Ogden on what is now 28th Street and Adams Avenue. Chauncey, Orens' brother, built the building on that corner that was used as a railroad hospital. This building was also used as the Lewis School later.

Oren was assigned by the church to be one of the men on a supply detail meeting Mormon companies at the Fort in Wyoming, and helping them into Salt Lake City. Oren met the company in Wyoming in which Ann Hinchcliff was traveling in the late spring of 1854.

There was a story about that meeting. It seemed that in New York a fortuneteller had told Ann that she was soon to meet a tall man on a horse wearing a very large hat and buckskin clothing. They had joked about this man all across the plains. As they drove into the Wyoming Fort, there was Ann's man on a horse coming toward them.

Oren and Ann were married that fall, October 1, 1854. They went to live near Oren's mother, Sally, on Adams Avenue. There Martha Ann was born, December 28, 1855, and Oren Jr. on January 2, 1858.

Then Oren Alton Jr. was a few months old; Oren took his wife and two children back to Iowa. He was to dispose of his family's property in Council Bluffs. Their third child, Eliza, was born on April 19,1860. While they were still in Council Bluffs, Ann's mother, Hannah, and Ann's son, Wilford, and nephew Mathias joined them. They all returned to Utah together with the Milo Andrus train in the fall of 1861.

This time the family settled at about 37th Street and Pacific Avenue. On October 19, 1862, Mary Coquela was born. She died on October 21, 1864. Margaret Estella was born October 26, 1865, and Clarissa on January 24, 1868.

Oren was grading for the railroad and decided to work between Ogden and Sacramento. Ann cooked for a crew of men while taking care of her children. They went to the Sacramento Valley with the intention of staying, but on arrival, Oren became very ill with malaria. He had suffered severely with it in Council Bluffs, so that autumn found the family trudging back to Utah.

In 1870, Oren purchased eighty acres of land east of the town of Hooper, Utah, and took up farming. In 1871, Ann had another girl, Emma Oreilla, but she only lived a little over a month.

The family was still very poor and the girls herded cows. They had no shoes and the salt grass cut their feet. On November 10, 1875 Ann's mother, Hannah Field Hinchcliff, died in Riverdale, Utah. In 1877 their daughter Eliza died. She was just seventeen, with golden hair and the love and pride of the family. It was a great shock and Ann's happy spirit seemed to leave her.

In 1877, Oren and his brother Chauncey, built their mother and sister, Esther, a home at Marriott, Utah. In 1881, Oren acquired land in Ogden, Utah. After building a three room adobe house, moved his family into it. By this time Oren Jr. and Martha (Mrs. James Cassin) were married and raising families. The new place was north and east of the Mountain View Cemetery, from 33rd Street north to almost 32nd street and from Gramercy Avenue west to Madison Avenue. The Thomas O. Smith Elementary School is built on two acres of the property.

In 1888, Margaret married Thomas Peek and went to live on the property near Hooper. Oren Jr. built a house north of his parents. Clarissa married Burt L. Lampman and lived nearby. When her son Cecil was born, her husband left her and she went to live with her parents.

When Cecil was a little over a year old, his grandfather, Oren, came in for his midday meal. He had been digging a well just outside the home. He sat down and took Cecil on his knee and within seconds he was dead of a heart attack. This was March 1 1892.

The following years were probably very hard for Ann. Her life with Oren had been happy and harmonious. She had him to turn to and he had always been kind and considerate, despite the hard work they both had always done. They were always together.

Nine years later Clarissa married Charles S. Brace, a native of Kansas. He was a carpenter and in time added several rooms to the adobe home. But two rooms of the adobe were Ann's bedroom and a sitting room. A large cherrywood bed, a tall wardrobe, a clock and large mirror, which Ann had brought from England and across the plains, were in the bedroom. The sitting room had two platform rockers and a china closet with hand painted china teacups and plates of which Ann was very fond. Outside her sitting room window was a garden of herbs, brought from England, including a bush of sage, rosemary and a bush called Old Man.

Ann was small with a round face, dark eyes, and a very clear; white "English skin." Her hair was dark as a young girl, but as she grew older it turned very, very white. She seemed never to waste words. She talked little, but when she did she meant what she said. She loved to be read to, and her favorite was poetry. Some of her favorite axioms were, "The longer a job is left, the harder it is to do." "Waste not, want not." And a "watched kettle never boils" and "Cleanliness in every respect is supreme."

Ann Hinchcliff Hadlock, died on May 29,1913, at the age of 83.
