Joseph Strickland (b. Bet. 1760 - 1770, d. Aft. 1830)
Notes for Joseph Strickland:
Joseph Strickland was found in the 1800 census in South Carolina. In 1805 he is found in the Georgia Land Lottery, along with six other Stricklands. We then find him in Robertson County, Tennessee in 1810; and finally, in Macon County, Illinois in 1819, where he died.
His neighbors were Benjamin and Peterson Cherry. When the Cherry's moved to Overton County, Tennessee, in 1808, Joseph and Warren G. Strickland also went to Tennessee. The Tennessee Census of 1810 records Wiatt Strickland as a near neighbor of Garland Hall in Robertson County. The elderly couple in Wiatt's household were probably Joseph and Louise, with young Clemmon includeed as one of the children. Warren G. Strickler (sic) lived in Rutherford County.
Garland Hall married Penelope Strickland, a daughter of Joseph and Louise Strickland. Penelope was born in South Carolina in 1791. She died in the year 1828 and did not make the journey to Illinois with her husband Garland Hall and their children
Benjamin Cherry married Elizabeth Strickland, also a daughter of Joseph and Louise Strickland. Elizabeth was also born in South Carolina in 1799.
The Stricklands came to Illinois in 1819 from Tennessee. Elizabeth came out the following year to marry Benjamin Cherry.

Macon County, Niantic Township History Book
Early Settlements--This township was among the earliest settled in the county. In the year 1825, Joseph Strickling, a native of either Ohio or Kentucky, settled in section 23, T. 16 N., R. 1 W., and to him belongs the honor of first settling what is now Niantic township. Mr. Strickling erected a log house and improved some land on section 23, where he resided for a number of years. His family was of ordinary size; some of them died and the others have moved away. At present none of the pioneer family are living in the county. Very soon after Mr. Strickling, Niantic received another settler in the person of William Turner, who came with his family from one of the adjoining counties and located on section 15, where he erected a log cabin and began improvements. From this time to the year 1840, there were but few permanent settlers. About the year 1840, a settlement was made by Joseph Blankenship on, or very near section 25, (Twp. 16-1.)
The first birth was that of a child of Wyatt Strickling, which occurred at a very early date after the first settlement of the Strickling neighborhood. Another child of Wyatt Strickling died a number of years after the settlement, and was the first death in the township.

History of Niantic
William W. McDaniel and Joseph Strickland were the first settlers in Niantic township in 1825.A pay school opened in a log cabin in 1847 and 5 years later the village of Prairie City is laid out.One year later, the Great Western Railroad was built through Niantic. The village is called Long Point (because of it's proximity to the Long Point Slough south of the village), Lockhart(because of Jesse Lockhart's Post Office), and Prairie City. This became trying for the citizens and a vote was held in 1853 between the names of Lockhart and Niantic (a name suggested by immigrants from Niantic, Connecticut).Niantic won by a vote of 7 to 6.

Long Point was known from the very earliest days of the county. In laying out roads and in giving directions, Long Point often was mentioned in early records.
The first school house in the township was built in 1847 in the timber near the Strickland home....
