Mr. John Buckland is the Progenitor of the Bucklands in WV. The first trace of him is found when he swore an "oath of Fidelity and Support to Maryland" on March 3, 1778 in Montgomery County, MD. Later John Buckland appeared in the 1784 and 1785 Tax List in Berkeley County, VA. From 1790 to 1795 he was
in the Rockingham County, VA Tax List. In 1796, 1797 and 1798 John Buckland appeared in the Greenbrier County, VA Tax List, presumably the part of Greenbrier County that became Monroe County in 1799. He was in 1799 - 1807 Monroe Tax List. He had migrated through Maryland and Virginia to settle in Western Virginia. His death came in 1807 or 1809.

Of John BUCKLAND's children, 2 sons remained in Monroe County VA; (1) Thomas (1775-1840's) John's oldest child married Margaret Wickline (daughter of Jacob Wickline) who lived to be in her 90's. Thomas's oldest son, John
Buckland married Mary Raines in 1826 Monroe County, VA; had 10 children most of whom lived around Peterstown, WV and Rich Creek, VA One of the ten, Jacob H. Buckland (1830-1913) a Tanner and devout Mason who has several
descendants left in the area. (2) Stephen BUCKLAND (1788-1860) married Melinda MEADOWS (daughter of Francis MEADOWS) on February 11, 1911
in Monroe County, VA. Their children were:
Raiburn (1812-1880's)
Elizabeth (1815-1883)
John Stephen (Squire Jack) (1816-1889)
FRANCIS (1821-1892)
James A. (1823-1904)
Richard Weatherhead) (1825-
Mary Jane (1829-1903)
Peter (1832-1860)
All died in Summers County except Raiburn who died in Fayette County. John Stephen and 2 of his sons fought for the Union during the Civil War. Squire Jack was mentioned several times in the first Summers County History as having been active in the Union Army and being a Justice of the Peace for 8 years.

Richard Weatherhead and several of his brothers came by horse drawn wagons and walking into this area. Richard Weatherhead with his children; Shannon, Richard, Roland, Leanna Virginia, and wife Sarah Lottie Wheeler
came across the Allegheny Mountains to the big rock on the Wiggins Road. As it was late evening they stayed there all night. Richard decided he had come too far, so the next morning they turned back through the mountains to
Upland where he settled. The rest of the family settled at Big Creek and Pauley Creek. There are several descendants of these brave pioneers still living in this area of Summers County.
