William Gowanlock, born April 21, 1798, in the Parish of South Dean, Roxburghshire, Scotland, married Christian Laidlaw, born July 12, 1801, at Weensmore, Roxburghshire, Scotland, on the 25th day of June, 1824.In 1842, William, a man of marked force of character, strong perseverance and indomitable courage, left his native land, Scotland, bringing with him a family of 5 sons, and 3 daughters. One son was born later.
On arriving in Canada, he took up his abode in the Township of Chinguacousy, where he spent the first two years cleanring a farm. With the help of his older sons, he was able, in the course of six or seven years, to completely clear it, rendering it valuable.
The County of Bruce, at the time (1851) offered special inducements to men with large families who were able to dispose of their property in the older settlements, and betake themselves to the 'Queen's Bush', carrying with them the proceeds of their industry.
William Gowanlock came down the Saugeen River from Walkerton of rafts, and settled on the river banks where he made a home. Only a few settlers had preceded him, and as his house was near the river, down which most of the pioneers came, it was for years more like a hotel, than the home of a farmer.
At least 1,000 acres was cleared and occupied by himself and his sons. He settled on Lots 21 and 22, Con. 7, Saugeen. This became known as the Gowanlock Settlement.
William was a strong Presbyterian, and in his home the nucleaus of the Dunblane congregation was formed.
He died in 1888 at the age of 90 years and 6 months. His wife Christian died in 1891, also at 90 years of age. Both are burried and Sanctuary Park Cemetery, Port Elgin, Ontario.
