Notes
Thomas was either born in Wigs town, Scotland, or in Donegal, Ireland. No baptism records exist for him in Scotland, so it is most likely that his parents came to live on their farm in Grouse Hall just before his birth in Donegal. Thomas is listed in many sources as the son of Geoge Mc'Candlish of Wigs town. He married before 1780 in Ireland, and he died in Carronoffe, Innishowen, Donegal, while living on the farm of Robert Mc'Candless. Family legend has it that his father George, or his grandfather had purchased the Grouse Hall property in Glenelly, Donegal, and Thomas lived most of his life on this said property, which was known for its Flax growing. Thomas encountered handbills looking for descendants of the Candlish family, which was claiming title to the West highlands estate of this family. The handbills state that this estate was lost ca. 1715, which fits in perfectly with the time-frame of this family, for they appear around this date in Wigs town, obviously being transplanted. The handbill claim is held in the Chancery court in Scotland. Thomas appears in the CD "Flax Growers in Ireland in 1796", as being "Thomas Mc'Canlis (Mc Candless), and growing Flax in Donegal. He is also listed in the "Spinning Wheel Primer" He owned spinning wheels for the purpose of Flax production. From 1811-1820 he may be the same Thomas Mc'Canlis who lived in the town of Shinn, and paid taxes. In 1796 he lived in Upper Moville, Donegal, Ireland. The Presbyterian Church records of Donaghmore, shows that our Thomas Mc'Candles did reside in the township of Shinn from 1785-1820, he was listed as a member of this church from this township. Shinn was found in Newry, Donaghmore, Loughbrickland, and Banbridge.

Cause of death: Influx of Urethra.

Notes
John was baptized in the Cloncha Parish in Donegal, Ireland. Neil Paterson had a son John baptized on the same day in this church, no doubt he was related to Mary Paterson, the wife of Thomas Mc'Canlis of Drumley. John was buried in Westchester county, New York, the exact Cemetery is not known. His death certificate states that he was 84 years old, and that he was living at 137 31st street in Manhattan. The death record (NYVR -1862) states that he was born in Ireland, and that he died of Influx of Urethra. In 1827 John was living in Garvaghy Parish, Iveagah Lower Barony, Lower half of Lisburn, and Banbridge Union in county Down, Ireland (Tithe Applotments). He married a woman named Jane, whose ancestry is not known. I had thoughts at one time that she was the Jane Carrouthers mentioned in some records, this Jane being the daughter of Adam Carrouthers of Ireland. That Our John, and Jane had a son named Adam led me to believe this was a true connection. However, there is no proof that this Jane is the same as Jane Carrouthers. I leave her ancestry as being unknown. Jane Mc'Canlis was listed in Obituary notices as dying in New York city on 20 Feby., 1852. Again, however, it is not known whether this was the same Jane or not. Also Brooklyn City Directories for 1867-1868 list a Jane Mc'Candless living at 22 Walworth street. Again it is not known whether this woman was the same Jane. Otherwise nothing else is known of this Jane. While the Tithe Applotments of Ireland list John as living in the location given above in 1827, it is possible that this again was another John. For on 30 Sept., 1826 we find a John Mc'Canlis, and family coming to America. They arrived at the port of Baltimore, and he was listed as a weaver from Ireland. It is known that his son Thomas had listed Maryland as an incorrect play of birth in the 1855 NYC census. However, again, this record does not list the children, or wife of this John, so this could be another man. From 1826 until 1837 or so John lived in Maryland, and then moved to New York city. What is definitely known of our John was on 06 Nov., 1839 John Mc'Candless was naturalized in New York city, his residence listed as Brooklyn. There is no doubt that this was indeed the correct John, for his son Thomas was definitely living in Brooklyn in 1839. From 1840-1841 John was listed in the New York City directory as living at 184 Grand street, and he worked as a weaver of boots, and shoes. His Naturalization record was recorded by a friend named Alexander Chorter (p.117). Based on some family traditions, especially with the Pittsburgh branch of the family, This John never came to America, but instead lived with his brother Cornelius in Donegal. It is this author's belief that the John who was naturalized in NYC in 1839 was the son of Thomas, and Mary. John was listed from 1842-1848 working as a carpenter in NYC, and living at 150 W. 16th street. From 1849-1857 he continued to work as a carpenter.
