Notes for John Bradey:
The first ancestor to this English branch of the Brady family was John, and the place of his birth in England has not been established. The surname of Brady seems to have been of Irish ancestry way back in history, but our Brady line has its roots in England. Early on the surname was referred to as "Mac Brady", or "Mac' Bradaigh", or as just plain "Bradach", and it was found in early Irish history as a powerful Breffney Sept in County Cavan, Ireland. It is not known whether the English line of this family was related to this early Sept, for it may have had a completely different origin. The name of Brady has been written in many different ways, such as Brade, Brada, Bradye, Bradey, Bradya, Braddie, Braddy, Braide, and Baidey. In P.H. Remy's book "A Dictionary of British Surnames" the surname of Brady was written early on as Brade, and Broad in England, and in Scotland as Broad, Braide, Brade, Braid, Bradie, Brody, and Broady. In England, and Scotland the name was usually given At men who were broad or wide. It was also referred to as the person with the "Broad eye". The old English version was usually given as a nick-name to a person who was a dweller by the "Broad Island". The name seems to have been written early on in Scotland as Brodie. Early in English, and Scottish history there was a Roger Bradie (Bradye, Bradeye) living in Oseney, in England in 1170. This was probably one of the first mentions of this surname in England, but no known relationship exists with out family. Many others with various spellings of this surname lived from 1184 until 1430 in such areas as Oseney, Kent, Durham, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, and in Surry. From about 1430 or so we find reference to a Richard Brady living in Dundee, Scotland. Again the English, Scottish, or Irish origin of our John of London is not known. Where John was born is not known, but he was attending the All Hallows the Less Parish in London as early as 1649. We last see him in this parish record in 1656, and none of the listings in this parish indicate where he came from.
