Generation No. 1

      1. Jan Jochem1 Calyer1 was born Abt. 1615 in Boitzenburg, Mecklenburg, Germany, and died Abt. 1658 in New Amsterdam. He married Magdalena Waele1 Abt. 1638 in Holland. She was born Abt. 1618 in Holland, or France, and died Aft. 1660 in New Amsterdam.

Notes for Jan Jochem Calyer:
Jan's middle name sometimes appears as Jochane, and he was born in Germany. The surname itself was often written as Caljer, Calder, Caillier, Calyer, Colyer, and later on as Collier. A German spelling often appears as Kalder. At an early age he moved to Amsterdam, Holland, and he was a Calvinist, or Protestant. His mother's first name may have been Dorothea, but nothing is known of his European ancestry. He first appears in New Amsterdam records on 08 August, 1643 when he purchased a home, and lot in that city. He was appointed arbitrator in a court action in the New Amsterdam court in 1635 during the case of Burger joris vs. Jan Cornelis. In 1649 he leased some land from Dirck Volckertszen. In 1651 he leased land again from Dirck. Jochem lived in New Amsterdam at this time, for he owned a house, and lot on the Hoogh street, a road that led to the ferry. It was located behind the public tavern. Nothing is known of his wife's ancestry, and this author has conducted some searches on the internet, and IGI records to no avail. In some baptism records in the NYDRC his name was written as Jochem Colart. He, and his wife Magdaleen Wale were witness to a baptism in the NYDRC on 08 July, 1654, and he was witness again on 04 July, 1655. Again on 09 April, 1656 he, and his wife were witness to another baptism in the NYDRC.
