Descendants of Steven Coerten

Generation No. 1

      1. Steven4 Coerten (Koert3, Albert2, Coert1) (Source: (1) Van Voorhees, Elia W. "A Genealogy of The Van Voorhees Family in America", 1888.., (2) Jameson, J. Franklin, "Narratives of New Netherland, 1609-1664", 1909..) was born Abt. 1611 in Hees, Drenthe, Holland, and died February 16, 1683/84 in Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York. He married (1) Aeltje Wessels Bet. 1638 - 1639 in Holland. She died Abt. 1648. He married (2) Willempe Roelofse Seubering Abt. 1648 in Holland, daughter of Roelofse Seuberinge. She was born Abt. 1615 in Zwiggelte, Hollandd, and died Unknown in New Amsterdam.

Notes for Steven Coerten:
He was witness to a baptism on 02 April, 1677 in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed church. He was again witness to a baptism in the NYDRC on 14 Jan., 1665. The origin of this family has been well established by many historians, and while Steven Coerts never used the surname of Van Voorhees, many of his ancestors did eventually adopt this surname based on the town where his ancestors came from in Holland. The author has been working on the Rockland county, New York Stevens family for many years, and while many previous historians have concluded that Stephen Stevens, and his wife Marytje were descendants of Jan Stevens of NYC, it has now been established based on many evidences that he was indeed a descendant of Steven Coerten. This author has concluded through extensive research dealing with the church records in Brooklyn, and Rockland counties that there is little doubt that this conclusion is the correct one, as will be shown below. Steven Coerts was a farmer at Pol's erve in Holland in 1655. From 1658-1660 he was a tenant of Pol's erve in the town of Ruinen. In the Manuscript collection of Mynheer Van Ruynan of 1642, Steven Koerts was living in Hees, and he owned a house, and garden. In 1655 he acted as bail in Pol's erve for Jan Steverts. In 1658 John Struuck rent master at Dickeninge Cloister, rented land to Steven Coerts on 22 May of that year. In March, 1659 Steven purchased boards from a Mr. Struck in this town. This is all we know about Steven's life in Holland, but we do know a lot about his life after he decided to come to New Amsterdam in 1660 when he was around 50-60 years old. We know that he came to New Amsterdam in 1660 on the ship "De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow), along with his wife, and children, and his daughter Hendrickje Stevense, and her husband Jan Kiers (Kiersen). In Nov., 1660 he purchased from Cornelis Dircksen Hoogland 9 morgans of corn land, 7 of woodland, 10 plain land, and 5 salt meadows in the town of Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York. He built his own home here, and then a barn, when the area was called Amersfoort. He opened one of the first breweries in this location, for he purchased at this time brewing apparatus, kettle house, and casks for 3000 guilders (Flatland Records Lib.B. p.37). Keep in mind that a Morgen of land is equal to about 2 acres, so this was a lot of land, and he musts have been a man of some means to shell out this much money. We know that he held title to land in Pol's erve in Holland, which consisted in a house, barn, sheep, 2 vegetable gardens, sprout yards, and meadows. On 19 March, 1664 he was appointed as the city magistrate for Flatlands. In 1677 he was listed as a member of the Flatbush DRC. His name was mentioned in a deed on 08 March, 1697 in Flatlands, when he willed his lands to his children. It names his children (Book 2; p.34 Kings county deeds). Steven Coerts was already deceased when these deeds were drawn up, for he died on 16 Feb., 1684 in the town of Flatlands, at the age of 84.
