Notes for Jan De Deckers:
The surname of Decker or Deckere is most likely of Flemish or Belgian origin. The meaning of the surname is vocational, and was early on given to persons who covered roofs. George C. Evans was one of the early historians of this family, and he has done a great deal of research on the family, and wrote an article for such in the New Jersey Genealogy Magazine. The surname of Decker has often been written as de Decker, De Deckere, and Dekker. This family should not be confused with a similar named family which eventually made Ulster county, New York their home. Jan's first wife's name is not recorded, but she gave birth to the first born child named Abraham. They moved from Antwerp to Dordrecht, where she died. Jan then resided in Dordrecht where he was a man of some substance, and his name often appears in tax records in this town. He was living on Voorstraat in Dordrecht as late as 1604 when he paid tax on his fireplace.
