Descendants of Reverend Richard Denton

Generation No. 1

      1. Reverend Richard3 Denton (Richard2, Richard1) (Source: (1) "Cambridge University alumni books".., (2) "NYGB Volume 117".., (3) "International Genealogical Index, 2000".., (4) Internet Denton Family History site..) was born Abt. 1586 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, and died Abt. 1662 in England. He married Helem Windelbank November 16, 1617 in Southwerk, Surrey, London, England (Source: "Southwerk, London Parish Register"..), daughter of Thomas Windibank and Frances Dymoke. She was born Abt. 1588 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

Notes for Reverend Richard Denton:
Richard Denton was born ca. 1586 in England, and graduated from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England in 1623. He came to New England around 1635. The "Cambridge University books" first list him as a Preacher at Halifax, England, and it states that he was a "Sizor (Undergraduate) of St. Catherine Easter from 1621-1624, a priest on 08 June, 1623, and Deacon ata Petersborough on 09 March, 1622/23. He later went on to be the Curate of a chapel in Halifax. In 1635 Richard must have just arrived in Ct., for he was living then in Wethersfield. From 1641-1643 he was living in Stamford, Ct.. On 30 October, 1640 Rev. Richard Denton, along with Thomas Weekes, John Jessup, and others were early settlers in Wethersfield, Connecticut Colony, and they purchased land from the Rippowanes Indians in the New Haven Colony, now known as Stamford, Ct.. Rev. Denton was to remove there the following March, and the others by November, 1641. When Rev. Denton accompanied by a part of his congregation, migrated to Hempstead, Long Island in 1644, Mr. Weekes did not go with him. Richard was a man of great soul, gracious and a great Christian, a man with but one eye. In 1647 he was living in Hempstead, and he was then listed as being 61 years old. From 1656-1659 he was still living in Hempstead, but in 1659 his wages were not paid, so he returned to England. He had fallen out of favor with the settlers in Hempstead. He left his children behind, and they all went on to found numerous parts of a great American Family.
