Descendants of Dirck Theunisen Jansen Siecken Dey

Generation No. 1

      1. Dirck Theunisen Jansen Siecken1 Dey (Source: Hasbrouck, Kenneth E., and Ruth P. Heidged, "The Deyo (Deyos) Family", 1958..) was born Abt. 1618 in Amsterdam, Holland, and died July 11, 1693 in New York City. He married (1) Jannetje Theunis December 28, 1641 in New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed church. She was born Abt. 1620 in Amsterdam, Holland, and died Bef. December 13, 1658 in New Amsterdam. He married (2) Geertie Jans Van Langendyck October 18, 1659 in New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed church.. She was born in St. Marten, Noord, Holland.

Notes for Dirck Theunisen Jansen Siecken Dey:
He married a second time to Geertie Jans. Dirck carried with him many alias names such as Siecken, Sichem, Sicken, Sycan, and Zieken. It is possible that one of these names was his real last name, and that he used the surname of Dey as his Alias. The last name of Dey was often spelled as Die. Dirck was a soldier along with Hans Reiger in the service of the West India company, and he was brought to court in New Amsterdam for insolent behavior towards citizens on the Heeren Straat, and for striking their superior officers. He was sentenced to be shot on 21 Feby., 1647. He was eventually pardoned, and obtained from Governor Stuyvesant on 16 June, 1654 for a patent for a plantation near Communipaw, (Jersey City), New Jersey. This plantation was located at Pembrepogh. He was admitted to the rights of a small burgher in New Amsterdam on 26 April, 1657, and in 1665 he was living on Buyten de Lant Poort street. Dirk Siecken was a defendant with Jan Smedes (Plaintiff) in 1664, when Dirck bought a house from Jan for 425 guilders. Dirck said house was defective with a bad leak, and the plaintiff said no. In 1677 Governor Andross leased to Dirck for 30 years the Duke's Bouwery now belonging to Trinity church, and after that date he lived upon these premises, and most likely died there. Dirck sold his land in Communipaw to Enoch Michelse Vreeland on 13 Feby., 1679, and he also sold two parcels of land lying at Pembrepogh on 12 May, 1668. The will of Dirck Janse Dye, who was then living in the Outside ward of New York city, was dated 05 Dec., 1683, and it was proven 11 July, 1693. The will mentions his second wife Geertie Johnson, and his two children, Theunis, and Jannetje Dye. His widow remarried on 11 Nov., 1687 (New York Dutch Reformed church) to Theunis Gysbertse Bogaert, the widower of Sara Rapaille, who was living in the Walebocht, Long Island. Dirck had established a grist mill, and ran a ferry at the foot of the present day Dey street, which was named in honor of the family. New Amsterdam court records show that he was a defendant as Dirck Siecken, against Jan Smedes. This record, dated in 1664, shows that Dirck had purchased a home from Jan, and that the home was in disrepair, and the roof was leaking. In April, 1665 Dirck was paid 2 Florins in Taxes while living outside the Land-Gate. In March, 1666 Dirck Sicken was elected as overseer of Roads, and fences in New Amsterdam. The European ancestry of Dirck has not been established. Some historians state, without proof, that he was a descendant of a French Count. Dirck Theuniszen Sieken, and Fytie Hartmans were witness to a baptism on 09 July, 1662 in the NYDRC. He was again witness to a baptism in this church on 04 Feb., 1674.

Notes for Geertie Jans Van Langendyck:
Her marriage record indicates that Tunis was the widower of Sara Rapalje, and that she was the widow of Dirck Day.
