Descendants of Mr. Jones

      1. Mr.1 Jones1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 was born Abt. 1660.

Notes for Mr. Jones:
After many years of research this author has not been able to conclusively identify the proper parents of Edward Jones of Staten Island. The only person found in any records prior to 1717 in Staten Island that carried this surname, or a variation thereof, was a Thomas Joanes, who in 1680 was listed in the endorsed land records as having owned a piece of land in Staten Island. Who this Thomas was in anyone's guess, for this author has conducted a very through search of all Thomas Jones, or Joanes, or Johnes, in the New York area during this time frame, and has not found anyone with this name connected with Staten Island at all, and this man's name never appears again in Staten Island records. I did find at least one, possibly two men of this name who lived in Huntington, Hempstead, and eventually Jamaica, Long Island, but none of these men ever mentioned a son named Edward, and Edward never named anyone of his sons Thomas, which could be a clue also. Thusly, while I know that at least one man named Jones, or Joanes, had at least owned land in Staten Island as early as 1680, there is absolutely no known connection to our Edward's family. A more plausible possibility, albeit still unproven, is the Edward Jones who was baptized in 1697 in Woodbridge, and Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He was the son of a man named Edward Jones, and his wife Jane Cone, both of that area. This Edward lived just across the Kill from Staten Island, very close indeed, and no Thomas's are found in this family at all. This Edward appears in the Woodbridge, and Elizabeth records only up until about 1722 or so, and they disappears, and no mention is found as to where he moved to, or who he married, if indeed he did marry? Some family naming patterns do exist for our Edward of Staten Island, and the Edward of Woodbridge, such names as Abigail, and Edward continue to appear in the Staten Island family, as they did in the Woodbridge family. Edward Jones, the husband of Jane Cone of Woodbridge, was the son of Edward Jones, and Lydia, who in turn was the son of Jeffery Jones, of New England, and Southhampton, Long Island. No Staten Island records have indicated where our Edward Jones came from, and he had no known contact with anyone from Woodbridge, or Elizabeth, New Jersey, so the evidence to connect these two men falls far short of the evidence needed to place him in this pedigree. However, this is the only Edward Jones in the area who I can positively date, and for which I have found a Baptism record. There also was a Edward Jones who lived in the late 1720's in Jamaica, or at least attended the church there for a short while, but his parentage is not known, and it is unclear whether he was the same man as our Edward. In conclusion, no known parents exist for our Edward of Staten Island, even though the Edward born in 1697, the son of Edward, and Jane Cone of Woodbridge may seem to be a close match, but unproven.
