Notes for General Josue Mercereau:
The Mersereau family is an old, and distinguished French family. The surname itself has been mis-spelled in the following manner. The name often appears in ancient records as Mercereau, Mercheroe, Marssero, Mersereaux, Massero, Mesro, Mercheraux, Mascero, Moserow, Mesero, Mossero, Marsero, Mosjero, Mysro, and Merserue. The modern spelling of this name was most often seen as Mersereau, or Mercereau. The surname should not be confused with the surname of Mesurole, which was another family in early New York history. The New York family claims descent from Josue Mersereau, who was a Generale de La Garde Royale. Which means he was a General in the Kings Regiment in the French Army. Baird in his great work "Huguenot Emigration to America" tells us that this family was among the "most industrious, and virtuous peoples" at the time of the Revocation, when St. Onge lost so many of its Protestant inhabitants. Little else is known of this French Huguenot.
