Descendants of Mr. Post

Generation No. 1

      1. Mr.1 Post was born 1749 in New Jersey, and died Unknown in New Jersey. He met Pryntye Van Winkle (Source: Nelson, William, "History of the Old Dutch Church at Totowa"..), daughter of Johannes Van Winkle and Jannetje Ryerson. She was born January 31, 1753 in Totowa, Essex county, New Jersey, and died July 19, 1815 in Wyckoff, Bergen county, New Jersey.

Notes for Mr. Post:
Based on an exhaustive search of all available records in the Essex, and Passaic county areas of New Jersey, it is still not known who the father was in this family unit. That the first born son Joseph only went under the surname of Van Winkel is known, and that the other two children always went under the surname of Post is also proven, but the true name of the father, or father's is still not known by this author, and many other historians of this family. It is possible that there were two fathers in this family unit, one for Joseph, and the other for the two other children.

Notes for Pryntye Van Winkle:
After a very thorough search of all available records in this area of New Jersey, it is the belief by this author that Pryntje Van Winkel never married, and had her three children born out of wedlock. It is also very possible that there were at least two fathers in this family unit, the first for Joseph, and the second for the other two children. There seems to be some discrepancy in her birth date, for if she was born when her tombstone indicated then she would have only been about 13 when her son Joseph was baptized in 1764. So her exact date of birth, which this author copied from her tombstone, may be incorrect. No marriage record exists for Pryntje, and no Post family records mention her name in either family histories, church records, or probate records. That she spent the first years of her life with her parents in Acquackanonck, Passaic county, New Jersey is known by the church records in this town. Before 1777 she relocated to the Totowa area, near Paterson, New Jersey, and eventually she moved to Wyckoff, Bergen county, New Jersey, where she died, and was buried in the Dutch Reformed church in this village, next to her daughter, and son Abraham Post. It is entirely possible that all three of her children were born out of wedlock, and it is also possible that she may have worked for, and lived in a household near Totowa, where the families name was Post, yet this is only a conjecture, for no probate records for the Post family mentions her name. But based on the fact that both her daughter, and son Abraham always went under the surname of Post could mean that she did in fact live in a Post family household, and that this family may have adopted these children, knowing full well that someone in this family was the father of the two mentioned, his last name being Post. At any rate the father to all the below mentioned children is not known by this author. The first time we see Pryntje Van Winkel was on 27 Oct., 1764 when her son Joseph Van Winkel was baptized in the Acquackanonck Dutch Reformed church. This would mean that Pryntje was only about 12 or 13 when she gave birth, which could mean that her birth date, as given on her tombstone, may be incorrect, or that she gave birth at a very young age. The husband's name in this record is "unknown". Witness to the baptism were Abraham Van Winkel, and Antje Van Winkel. We next see Pryntje on the 15th of August, 1773, when she, and Richard Pickstoon were witness to the baptism in this same church to Richard Pickstoon, the son of Anthony Pickstoon, and Antje Kip. The relationship of this family to Pryntje is not known. By 1775 or so she was now living in Totowa, and at this time her daughter was baptized in the Totowa Dutch Reformed church. We know that she was still living her in 1789 when her son Abram was baptized in this same church. Where she went to after 1790 is only a guess, but she did die in Wyckoff, which could mean that she moved to this area, where her children were living. The Totowa Dutch Reformed church records indicate that her first name Pryntje sounded just like Hester's last name, as found in the Scarlet Letter novel, her last name being Prynne. Obviously, the church knew that this woman's children were illegitimate, but yet she stayed by her children, and loved them, and made sure they were baptized in God's name. She was obviously a loving woman, regardless of the circumstances of these births. Some records indicate that she may have actually been born on 31 December, 1752 in Totowa. It was a common occurrence in colonial times when a child was baptized, that Illigetimate children were usually, not always, given two last names, such as in this case where borth Abraham, and Arrentye were baptized under the middle name of Post, and the mother's last name of Van Winkle. As in many cases where the children were eventually accepted as members of the community, the mother would eventually hope that the children would drop the last name, in this case Van Winkle, in favor of the middle name of Post, which was probably the last name of the father. No proof exists which would clarify this but, it was a practice in old colonial times.
