Generation No. 1

      1. Joost1 Van O'Blinus (Source: (1) Toler, Henry Pennington, "The New Harlem Register: A Genealogy of the Descendants of the 23 Original Patentees of The Town of New Harlem".., (2) Riker, James, History of Harlem.., (3) "Oblinus Family History" FHL 1321326, item 2..) was born Bet. 1610 - 1616 in Houplines, Lille, France, and died Aft. April 15, 1667 in Harlem, New York. He married Martina Westin Abt. 1639 in Mannheim, Germany. She was born Bet. 1615 - 1620 in Mannheim, Germany, and died Aft. 1664 in Harlem, New York.

Notes for Joost Van O'Blinus:
Joost's European ancestry probably lies in the town of Houplines, Lille, Flanders, France. Very little is known of his ancestors. Old family stories state that he fled Houplines ca. 1637, and went to live in Leyden, Holland. Many French families fled to Leyden to flee religious persecutions in France. In 1660 Joost, and his family left Leyden, and ventured forth to Mannheim, Germany, where his wife's family most likely came from. A thorough search of Mannheim records does not indicate whether the old family notes on this family holds any truth, that Martina's family was from this city. Family stories state that Joost moved to Mannheim for the Protestant elector, Charles Lewis, who promised them freedom of worship, was a welcome leader. In 1662 they returned to Leyden, and on 16 April, 1663 Joost Van Oblinus, and his wife Martine, with his son Joost Jr.,, and his wife Maria sailed for the New World on board the ship "The Brindled cow". There were about 90 persons on this ship, and the age of his son Joost Van Houpleyne was listed as being 18 years old. Upon their arrival in New Amsterdam Joost went to work starting a new life for his family. But no sooner had they arrived when they set out to fight the savage Indians in the area. The Esopus Indians were raiding, and threatening the villages around New Amsterdam, and the Van Oblinus men were garrisoned in the fort in New Amsterdam. On 07 June, 1663 Joost Sr., was called upon to fight the Indians in New Harlem. He was probably present during the Indian massacre at Esopus on this date also. He was in New Harlem in 1666, stationed at the outpost. It was in Harlem that Joost eventually moved, and he and his family flourished. Records show that he soon purchased land from Philip Casier, who was one of the original Patentees in Harlem. From 1665 to 1666 Joost Senior, and his wife Martina are shown as members of the New York Dutch Reformed church. On 12 June, 1666 Joost was elected as overseer of the village of Harlem. On 15 March, 1667 he attended meetings in regards to the freeholders, and the Harlem patent. On 15 April, 1667 he owned 2 oxen, and 4 cows in Harlem, and paid taxes on these animals. He owned a patent for a sawmill on the East River in Harlem, and he practiced this trade most of his life, while still being a farmer. Some records, found in old town records of Harlem, and in Riker's "History of Harlem" indicate that Joost Sr., went back to live in Holland, and his lands in Harlem were passed on to his son Joost jr..
