Welcome!

Among the many descendants of Toussaint Hunault dit Deschamps and Marie Lorgueil, I am of the 10th generation. It is interesting that they both came to Canada from France aboard the St. Nicolas-de-Nantes in 1653. Did they meet on board or before embarking on their perilous journey, or only later in Montreal? Was it "romance on the high seas?" Like a lot of antiquity, we'll probably never know for sure. We do know they became engaged in April 1654 and on 23 November 1654 were married at Ville Marie (Montréal, Quebec).

Like most settlers in early Canada, Toussaint had been contacted for five years as a labourer and, if necessary, a defender of the fort at Ville Marie (Montréal) in Nouvelle France (New France as it was then called). He obtained his concession (bought out his contract) early and began a life of farming, buying and selling property, and apparently creating a large debt.

Together Toussaint and Marie raised eight of their nine children (one died in infancy) and also cared for two other children for a while. Seven children married and there are many, many descendants from this pioneering couple. The youngest child, Charles, was last recorded at the baptism of his nephew, Gabriel Hunault, on 30 May 1695.

On September 13, 1690 Toussaint was murdered with a sword by Garbriel Dumont de Blaignac a French marine, who escaped. Although a civil suit was brought against the de Blaignac family, the Hunault family made no gain as they had ceded all their rights of a settlement to Charles Cougne to whom Toussaint owed much money. To this date we have not determined why he was murdered, but are still searching.

Marie lived another ten years and died in her son, Andre's home on 29 November 1700.

I am attempting to compile a descendancy for this couple and have over 37,000 descendants; male & female. If you can add a line I would be most appreciative. If you have any corrections, I would also like to be notified of those.

For privacy reasons, I have included online only the descendants born before 1930; unless deceased, I have over 79,000 names in my base. What you don't see here, please email me for more details.

Enjoy!
