The Lacheney/Lachenay name I have found has two possible original spellings. St. Laurent Church, Montreal records show that a son,Antoine, was born to Jacques LaChenay (DuChesnay) and Catherine Tremont (Tremou). I have a document signed in 1795 by Antoine in which he spells our name Lachenay. My Grandparents' marrage licence has the name spelled Lachenaye, but they signed it and my father's birth record and baptismal record Lachenay. The Lachenay spelling appears more often then any other between 1750 till 1919. My Greatgrandfather, Octave, remarried and the offspring from this marrage chose to change the spelling to Lachney. My grandfather, James Curtis Lacheney, had 4 sons and they all spell the family name Lacheney. After some searching, I have found that the spelling has been slightly changed only on church records. I feel this is because the Priest did not speak French, so when our family members were asked their names, the Priest wrote what he heard. I have found that the family name translated from French to English means Oak Grove
