| Researching our family tree from Michigan to Europe! My ancestors came to Michigan in the 1800's from Germany and Ireland, followed by the other half of my ancestors in the early 1900's from Italy and Czechoslovakia. Our families have always been farmers, having settled in Monroe County, Michigan from the beginning. My parents and I began this project in 1998, not knowing how it would capture our interest. We have followed the trail into New York and to Ireland. Our Family names grew from the Early's, Jurik's, Cardinals & Kopka's; to include the St. George's, Vogelsang's, Kearney's, Gallagher's, Durocher's, Engel's, and Priep names. We haven't found many relatives yet, but the few we have found have become e-mail friends that we share information and frustrations with. It's been a blast! The basic information we have is this: Daniel Early married Hannah Gallagher in about 1822 in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. They had 3 children who emigrated to NY in the 1840's. The children were James Mary, Daniel, and Hannah. James became a prominent priest in the Rochester, NY area, while Hannah and Daniel married and started families. Hannah married a man named Patrick Murphy with whom she had at least four daughters, three of whom became nuns. Daniel moved with his wife Margaret Kearney, and their children to Milan, Michigan. They carved out a farm for their family in 1869, and the farm remained in the family for 127 years. The other side of the family were also farmers. The Kopka and Engel families settled in and around Dundee, Michigan. The Kopka men helped form the Lutheran church in Dundee of which some family are still members. These two families came from Germany sometime in the mid 1800's. We know that some of the original Kopka's arrived in Monroe County, MI in 1850. The patriarch of our branch of Kopkas was named Johann Friedrich Koepke. His wife was named Maria Priep. They had 4 boys and one girl that we have connected to them. If you would like any information on any of the names listed here, we would be glad to share. We are constantly lookong to make more connections between the many families sharing our names. We have also found several great resources in Monroe County for researching your history. |
