Michael Lafreniere of Tacoma, WA:Information about Nicholas Barron-Lupien
Nicholas Barron-Lupien (d. 1698)
Notes for Nicholas Barron-Lupien:
NICHOLAS BARRON-LUPIEN
Nicholas Barron-Lupien was an ancestor of Sir Lorimer Gouin.Research notes will soon be appended.
Nicholas Barron-Lupien has also been located under Baron/Barron Lupien, Lupien dit Lafreniere, Lafreniere in Drouin and Tanguay Research Books. Nicholas is the First Ancestor for the LAFRENIERE descendants of Nouvelle France. He was most likely born in France and arrived near Montreal sometime before 1675.Currently, it is not known if this ancestor married in Montreal because there was no priest or chapel near Maskinonge,Berthier County, near Riviere du Loup, or if Montreal was the original settling place for Nicholas.Further research is necessary to determine such anecdotal information. Was Rivièredu Loup named after the Loupien/Lupien ancestor? Loupien/Lupien translates as "wolf-like". In French "loup" means "wolf".
Rita spent much time researching the possibility that Loupien Barron Lupien might have been an aristocrat with a coat of arms. ( Barron or Baron is an aristocratic title.) No coat of arms is found under the names of Barron,Baron, Lupien ,Loupien or LaFrenière. Heraldic designations were granted/conferred by the King, as the result of aristocratic birth, or chivalrous action in defense of the King or the country.
NOTE: During the archival research, Rita noted that Nicholas Barron-Lupien died almost one year before his spouse Marie Marthe bore a child to Andre Ethier. That child was renamed Joseph Lupien dit Lafrenière and declared the rightful heir of Nicholas Barron Lupien, despite the fact that Nicholas had two biological sons with Marie Marthe. The biological sons were at the funeral of their mother along with Joseph (? born in 1699), their half-brother, who had married Anne Lemire in 1721.
Branches of the Lafreniere family are: Lupien, Lupien dit Lafreniere, Lafreniere, Lafresnier, Lafresnaye, Piette/Freniere, Piet/Trempe/Courville.
The publication: " Les Canadiens-Francais---origines des familles et signification de leur noms " by N.E. Dionne,1914, Quebec/Montreal notes that the Lafreniere First Ancestor (Nicholas) came from the village of Fresnieres, in the department of Oise. The author claims that the name originates from the word: freniere---an area planted with ash trees.
Yet, marriage records indicate that Nicholas' parents were married at ? Villenauxe, near Troyes, department of Champagne, France and that the father'sname was Loupien Barron-Lupien.???Villenauxe/Villeneuve is about 55 miles SE of Paris. Neither Villenauxe nor Frenieres was a departure point, or port. Much research is needed in order to determine the village of origin in France.
This researcher would tend to believe the information she obtained from the marriage records of Nicholas Barron-Lupien found at the National Archives in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
In 1983, Rita Plourde travelled to New Orleans, Louisiana & environs, and learned that a Jean Lafreniere was a local hero, who with other Cajuns,( re-settled Acadians) tried to form a separate country, which was to be called IBERIA.He was 1 of 13 hanged for treason.
In Metarie, a New Orleans suburb, Rita noticeda LAFRENIERE Park (named for ???).
NOTE: In 2003, Michael Roger Lafreniere corresponded with the Historical Society in Metarie,LA and accessed The Lafreniere Park website in Metarie for more historical facts re: the Louisiana Lafrenieres.
