Notes for Marie-Marthe Chauvin:
MARIE MARTHE CHAUVIN LUPIEN dit LAFRENIÈRE
Marie Marthe Chauvin must have been a very strong character, She was the child of Colonists ( Pierre Chauvin & Marthe Autreil (Hautreux) and was of the first generation born in Nouvelle France. As a widow, she bore a child to Andre Ethier in 1699.
( Andre Ethier, father of Marthe's child, was born 6March1678.) The child was later named Joseph Lupien dit Lafreniere and declared to be the legal heir of the estates of Nicholas & Marthe.
Marthe and her children were one of the 5 pioneer-founding families of Maskinongé, in today's, Berthier County of Quebec, It is located near Trois Rivière/Three Rivers. Notarial Records of Petit & de la Fosse need to be researched for contracts re: Joseph's legal status & Marthe's 2 marriage contracts in addition to the settlement of Nicholas' estate and Marie Marthe's estate following her death in 1728.Also, if upon Nicholas's death, a trustee/tuteur was assigned to her children by the government - as was the custom.
Rita noted in archival research that at Marie Marthe's funeral in 1728, her sons by Nicholas Barron-Lupien( Pierre Lupien Baron, Joseph Lupien Belair, and Joseph Lupien Lafreniere ( né____ Ethier, born of her alliance with André Ethier)), attended her funeral. Also present was her 2d husband Jean Baptiste Fleury( with whom she had one child, Marie Angelique Fleury, born at Maskinongé in1706).
Marie Marthe's death & funeral records were the first time that the surname"dit LAFRENIERE"was used with the Ancestral name of Barron, Baron Lupien or Lupien. The recording cleric was Francois Cherubin Daniau, priest.
NOTE: During the archival research, Rita noted that Nicholas Barron-Lupien died almost one year before his spouse Marie Marthe bore a child to Andre Ethier. That child initially baptised as ______ Ethier, was renamed Joseph Lupien dit Lafrenière and declared the rightful heir of Nicholas Barron Lupien and his mother's estates; despite the fact that Nicholas had two biological sons with Marie Marthe. The latter had the changes recorded in Church and Notarial records. The biological sons were at the funeral of their mother along with Joseph, their half-brother, who had married Anne Lemire in 1721.
