Descendants of William Lake

46. GIBSON L.4 LAKE (ILA3, GEORGE B.2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1840. He married MARY HENDERSON March 12, 1867 in Taylor County, WV. She was born Abt. 1849.

Notes for G
IBSON L. LAKE:
I'm wondering if there is an error in the birth date of Saaranza. This date is a month before Gibson and Mary's marriage, which is not impossible but a little unusual in those days. The fact that the first two children are born on February 12 makes me suspect that they are twins born on February 12, 1868. This needs some research.

(2) Marion County Deed Book 34 - Page 157 verifies that Gibson is the son of Ila Lake and that he is married to Mary Henderson.

Notes for J
OHN AARON LAKE:

John and Margaret Lake are buried at the Church Cemetery on Glady Creek, near Fairmont, West Virginia. John's grave has no marker. My father (Lester Lake) told me of the time his father (Ila Henderson Lake) and he drove a horse and wagon to Glady Creek from their home on Pete Johnson Run with the gravestone for Margaret Lake's grave. He told my father at that time that John was allowing Grover (John's son) to waste all his money and John would probably end up penniless, which is what happened. Ila said that he would never buy John a gravestone and to this day there is no marker. His grave is marked only by a field stone. However, Ila did pay his father's funeral expenses.

In earlier years, John lived in what is now (1968) known as the John McDonald house near the now abandoned Lake schoolhouse. This house was built by John Adam Fast (per Bessie Lake Carpenter). Later John moved to property two miles upriver from Valley Falls. Bessie Lake Carpenter remembers visiting there as a little girl and on the way home in the buggy, they were caught in a rainstorm and her new hat was ruined. Her Aunt Sallie (Sarah, John's daughter) promised her a new hat if she would not cry. John later moved to State Street, in Fairmont where his wife died on November 11, 1915. He died at the home of his son Ila on Pete Johnson Run, near Fairmont. John also lived in Blueville, near Grafton, West Virginia before moving to the Fairmont area.

William and Parthenia were married July 31, 1864 in Green County, Pennsylvania. Parthenia was born in Taylor County, Virginia (now West Virginia). She was the daughter of Jacob and Blanchlet Steele Miller, one of twelve children. She is buried at McAlister, Oklahoma. William is buried in Leavenworth, Kansas. He lived in the old soldiers home in Leavenworth prior to his death.

Mary Roberts supplies the following in an e-mail dated September 27, 1997: William volunteered with Company E, 7th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry Volunteers on April 3, 1865 and served until mustered out on July 1, 1865 at Munson Hill, Virginia (from National Archives). He is described as 18 and 9/12th years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, fair skin, hazel eyes and dark hair, born in West Virginia and a farmer. In his application for a pension, his medical conditions were many: rupture, chronic diahrea, piles, impaired hearing, rheumatism and a heart problem. He gave the same information as shown on this family sheet as family information including his wife and all the children. He received a pension of $8 a month. In his application for his pension, he states: "I have not been employed in the military or naval service of the United States since the first day of July 1865. I contracted chronic diarhea and piles while in the military services of the United States and a member of the organization aforesaid in camp near Washington, D.C. in the spring of 1865. I incurred rupture from a fall received about the month of May, 1880. While passing over a rough piece of road, I stumbled and fell and shortly after I first noticed the appearance of rupture."

He was dropped from the pension rolls on May 9, 1912 due to his death. His last pay was February 4, 1912.
