Notes for MARTHA L. WINTERS:
Martha L. Winters married William Orville Douglas on August 4, 1915. On January 23, 1971, I visited with Martha Douglas on her farm in Fulton County, Pennsylvania near Hancock, Maryland. Her husband had been deceased about three years and she lived alone, with one son spending the daytime hours there doing the farming. She told me of a blizzard that struck about the time that she was born. They kept her mother in the room by the big wood stove to recover from childbirth. The wood being stacked outside in the snow was very wet, so it was placed under the stove to dry before burning. The old folks believed that this caused the dampness which brought on "childbirth fever" and the death of Martha Lake Winters only 12 days after her daughter and only child was born. Young Martha was raised by her paternal grandparents. Her father married again and lived nearby, fathering eight more children by his second wife.
