RANCIS PARTHENA LAKE:
All the above information and the following story were copied from two pages that were mailed to me by Sue Pringle of Bedford, Texas and which we have not been able to identify. It appears to perhaps be a history of the local area in Braxton County, West Virginia, since other families are also written up in this same paper. Obviously, more research needs to be done to verify the information, but I have used it here as the seed to further research:

Nimrod Evans Lake, Jr. and his wife Sarah Given Gregory (Francis' parents) lived in Holly District of Braxton County on the ridge separating Bear Garden Run and the Right Fork of the Little Kanawha River. One of the Lake's neighbors was the family of old Jacob Coger, a grizzled veteran of the War of 1812. In the late 1840's, two of Jacob Coger's sons, John and James, migrated south into the high mountains of what was then Randolph County, but would become Webster County in 1860.

John R. Coger married Sarah Lake's second cousin, Mary Gregory. John was a noted woodsman and hunter who thought nothing of making the long and arduous hike from his home high on Cold Knob between Gauley and Elk Rivers to visit his parents. In the early 1870's, one of John Cogers sons, Isaac Newton Coger, born in 1855, was old enough to accompany his father on these long walks. On one of these visits, John and Isaac stopped by Nim and Sally Lake's cabin to visit their in-laws. Isaac was instantly smitten with the Lake's oldest daughter, Frances Parthena, born 6 July 1857. In the spring of 1878, the Lake family made the long trip into Webster County to visit the Cogers and when Nim and Sally went home, they left behind Frances Parthena, who had become the wife of Isaac Newton Coger.

With the help of his father, brothers and numerous cousins, Isaac built a sturdy log house near the head of Laurel Creek of Gauley River near the summit of Cold Knob. On a clear day, Frances claimed that she could see Harper Ridge near her parents home from the summit of Cold Knob. In this remote mountain setting, Frances Lake and Isaac Coger raised a family of ten children, raised a garden large enough to feed them all throughout the year and maintained an apple orchard for which the Coger family was famous locally. Frances Lake Coger's children and their spouses were: (all of above children are named).

In February 1902, Frances's oldest daughter, Phoebe Miller, died a few days after giving birth to her third child. Although Frances was expecting her tenth and last child at the time, she took in the new baby and raised her as her own. In March 1904, Frances was stricken with influenza and died before a doctor could be brought through the deep snow from Webster Springs. Her distraught husband insisted on keeping the family together, and with the help of thirteen year old Laura, the rest of the Coger children grew up in their own home along with all three of Phoebe's children.

Frances Lake Coger was buried in the Morgan - Coger Cemetery on one of the highest points of Cold Knob and from which, on a clear day, Harper Ridge is visible in faraway Braxton County.
