He married (1) LAURA B. HARKCOM September 07, 1898 in Braxton County, WV. She was born March 29, 1881 in Pennsylvania, and died January 18, 1915. He married (2) SADIE MAY NUTT July 07, 1917 in Webster County, West Virginia ??, daughter of WILLIAM NUTT and JANE MILLER. She was born October 27, 1897 in Churchville, Lewis County, West Virginia, and died August 23, 1983.

Notes for ORAL BENSON LAKE:
Some of the children's birth records show the spelling of the mothers name as Lora. The marriage certificate shows Laura and is believed to be more accurate. Her maiden name is also shown interpreted as Harcorn by some.

After Laura died, Oral remarried to Sadie May Nutt. She was born in Churchville, Lewis County, West Virginia, the daughter of William Howard and Matilda Jane Miller Nutt. Oral and Sadie were married July 7, 1917.


Family records from Mary Louise Roberts suggest that Sadie was married for a short time to Jacob S. Smalley before her marriage to Oral. Some family members believe that Oral and Sadie were married in Webster County, but that has not been confirmed. Family information also says that Arthur Lake was killed in the military and that Charles died trying to jump onto a moving train.

(2) Braxton County Marriage Book - Page 509 shows Oral as 22 years old and Laura as 16 at the time of their marriage.
(3) Family records of Mary Roberts, 727 Osage Street, Salina, Kansas 67401-4501 (1997), granddaughter of Oral and Sadie Lake. Much of her information came from Sadie Lake's Bible.
(4) Oral Sr. and Sadie are buried at Poplar Ridge Cemetery, near Sutton, Braxton County, West Virginia.
(5) Oral Sr. died at Philipi, Barbour County, West Virginia.
(6) Census records of 1920 for Braxton County, West Virginia show Oral and Sadie living as man and wife with six children: Arthur, age 20; Clara, age 15; Lester, age 8; Mildred, age 6; Mable, age 1 1/2; and Henry, age 3 months.
