CHARLES ADOLPHUS⁵ LAKE (THOMAS NOBLE MARSHALL⁴, HARRISON B.³, WILLIAM LAKE² JR., WILLIAM¹ LAKE) was born September 28, 1884 in Barbour County, WV, and died September 21, 1952 in Barbour County, WV. He married BERTHA V. SAFFEL March 16, 1904 in Barbour County, WV, daughter of NATHANIEL SAFFEL and MARY SMITH. She was born December 11, 1884, and died June 1955.

Notes for CHARLES ADOLPHUS LAKE:
Bertha was the daughter of Nathaniel A. (1855-1915) and Mary Ann Smith Saffel (1854-1915). Aubrey Lake Dooley gave the following insight into her grandfather Nate's life in a letter to the author in 1983:

"Nate as a young man fell in love with two girls at the same time - Rachel Poling and Mary Ann Smith. He dated both girls for a time, but eventually married Rachel. Mary Ann was heartbroken. Nate and Rachel had a son, Charley. When Charley was only two years old, Rachel died. Eventually Nate went to Mary Ann, who was 29 at the time and still unmarried. He asked her to marry him and she was delighted. To Nate and Mary Ann were born Bertha, Albert and Delbert. Mary Ann treated Charley as her own. Nate and Mary Ann had a good life together. One day in later years, as Nate was turning a frisky colt to pasture, it raised up its' heels and kicked Nate badly. He died from those injuries on July 15, 1915 in Jerusalem Cemetery, six miles south of Philippi, West Virginia just off the old Belington - Philippi Pike. Rachel is buried at his head, Mary Ann at his side". Aubrey Lake Dooley was born this same year and always regretted that she never knew her grandparents, Nate and Mary Ann Saffel.
In another letter, Aubrey wrote about her early years at home:

"We children lived a very sheltered life and did not know of the rough places. My parents did and they guarded us from them. We were not allowed out late at night. Bars, dances, cards and drink were a no-no. We had school friends who could do these things, so we felt our parents were too strict. We left our house only after our parents had checked very closely to see that we would be safe. We could go to church anytime, Sunday school was a must. My mother made most of our clothes. They were sometimes patched, but always neat and clean. She also was the family barber. It often took two to cut brother Marshall's hair. He really hated to have it cut. On one occasion, Dad just shaved his head. His hair came back in curly and prettier than ever. After that, Mom had no trouble cutting his hair. Mom was the world's best cook. She baked her own bread and churned her own butter. It didn't last long once the hungry brood started in. She fried pork side by slicing it thin, rolling it in flour and calling it 'sour belly.' It made the best biscuit sandwich. My dad had strict table rules: clean face and hands and hair combed. Each had his own place at the table. When Mom called us to supper, that place was quickly filled. Dad was quite religious and always said the blessing. He often prayed in the outside toilet. You could hear him pray: 'grant me strength, oh God, for the trials of the day'. It was alright until you needed the toilet in a hurry. Then it was a real relief to hear him say: 'thank you Lord, and amen.'

'He always had horses. His beautiful harness and collars had "C. A. Lake" written in gold letters on them. Mom made yarn pom poms to hang from the harness to beautify the horses. In the winter, he also had sleigh bells and he would pull 10 or 12 kids on their sleighs to the top of the hill south of our house and let them ride down. He broke horses and also doctored them. He was also the family doctor. A bottle of castor oil and a box of Epsom Salts would cure anything. In our family, the next to oldest child was a boy and next to the youngest was a boy, with six girls in between. He chose me (Aubrey) for a boy and called me George. As long as he said George, everything was alright, but look out when he called me Aubrey. When the work was all done, we would sit on the rail fence and he would preach to me about the wicked old world and staying on the side of the Lord. Do your job well or don't do it all. Stay away from drink, bars and gambling. Go to church and obey God's word. Every good man has a good woman behind him - and my mom was that good woman. Dad's biggest fault was his terrible temper, which often got him into trouble, not only with his family but with his neighbors as well. After my first marriage broke up, Mom and Dad took care of my children, Patty and Carol Clark. Dad died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1952 and a stroke resulted in my mother's death in 1955. Both are buried in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington, West Virginia along with my sister, Opal. They did well with their big family and I am proud to call them Mom and Dad."
