Notes for R
OXIE RUBY LAKE:
After Ruby and Myres were married, they staked out a claim near White River, South Dakota, traveling there by covered wagon. Myres raised cattle on his claim until December 17, 1928 when he was declared insane and taken from his family. Ruby raised the children alone until they were all married. On June 7, 1945, Ruby and Charles were married.

All the men saw service in World War II. Clifford lost his life when he went down with his ship off Leyte, The U.S.S. Hael. All the boys settled near Shelton, Washington except Glen. He owns a store at Ethel, Washington (1970). Russell is a carpenter. Olive lives in Moab, Utah and Pearl lives in Montesano, Washington where she works in the court house.

The following story came in a letter from Ruby Lake Hitchings: Myres Rickards left Creston, Nebraska in May 1914 by covered wagon for his claim at White River, South Dakota. The wagon was pulled by two mules and a mare. Ruby left Creston a week later and met Myres at Lynch, Nebraska. They traveled about 20 miles a day. They ran into a bad rain and sand storm near Bonsteel, South Dakota. Arriving on their claim June 16, 1914, they found their little shack which was to be their home nearly lost in the high grass. They did manage to get in a garden that summer, in spite of the late date. They were visited often by an Indian family named White Horse. There was no drinking water on the claim, so it had to be hauled from neighboring springs. In winter, Ruby melted snow for drinking water and for washing. Their house was 12 by 14 feet until 1917, when Myres built on a 16 by 18 foot room. They killed many rattlesnakes. Six of their children were born on the claim without a doctor, the seventh was born in town, but the doctor arrived after the baby. They lost their claim after they were unable to pay off the debt for some cattle.

Ruby died at Shelton, Washington on April 18, 1977. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 21, with Pastor Tim Gallager officiating. She is buried in Shelton Memorial Park, Shelton, Washington.
