Lucile and Michael were later separated. Lucile taught at Gonzaga University in Seattle, Washington. Kathryn Lake Quackenbush has a newspaper clipping in which Lucile was honored for 25 years of service at Gonzaga University as an associate professor emeritus of English. She had a PhD in English. Lucile also had high aspirations in her youth of becoming an actress. She was in many dramatic and musical performances in Spokane and studied drama at the University of Washington. She spent time in New York, likely trying to break into Broadway. She was also an accomplished musician.

Notes for MICHAEL MCALPINE:
Michael and Lucile separated early in their relationship and Michael went off to Spain where he was reportedly killed in the Civil War there. He and Lucile lived for a time in Vancover, BC. Kathryn Daly Quackenbush's cousin Cornelius Waters and his mother visited them there (from a letter to Kathryn). Other verification of Michael's existence from a letter from Cornelius to Kathryn in 1991: " Lucile was married to an Englishman by the name of Michael. He worked for the Vancouver Sun as a reporter. He left and went to Spain and fought in their civil war there. I knew him and he was a wonderful man. He was killed in the Spanish Civil War."

She married MARCUS DALY July 05, 1930 in Spokane, WA, son of ALFRED DALY and FLORENCE PELLAND. He was born July 21, 1906 in Nome, Alaska, and died March 04, 1985.

Marcus was born in Nome, Alaska. Florence was a doll collector and had a grand display in her home. Kathy Daly Quackenbush wrote in May 1994 of her mother and dad:

I think that Mother was kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. Her mother followed her father's death by just a year and she mentioned this to me very often in a rather romantic text as though Mrs. Lake just pined away for Mr. Lake and could not bear to go on living without him. It seemed as though she put that same thought into her own belief system and it is true that she was absolutely crazy about my father so it didn't come as any surprise when she died almost exactly a year later. She really didn't want to go on without him. Having lived with that philosophy all of our lives, it did not shock me when my brother died either because he was very dependent on them, being as how we were a close knit family. My having children I think, made a big difference in my attitude because I adore them and my grandchildren and cannot imagine going off and not watching them grow up so I plan to live for a very, very long time.

Although my father was born in Nome, Alaska, he did not grow up there. Shortly after my father turned five, his dad, Alfred J. Daly, died. My grandmother was pregnant with Dad's brother, my uncle Don at the time she got the news. She was visiting her parents in Oregon at the time and my father and his older sister, my Aunt Dorothy, could never forget the cry of anguish from my grandmother when she received the news. He was supposedly on his way to join her, but there is a great deal of mystery surrounding my grandfather's death. There is a kind of aura about it that had a profound effect on our family as a whole, including my mother, who was very close to her mother-in-law. I thought that it was a fascinating study when I was taking psychology to work on a family of origin portrait because it turns out that both of my parents were middle children of a family of three. Each had an older sister and each had a younger brother. Both had fathers that used their first and middle name initials as their names. Mother's father was J.R. Lake and Dad's father was A.J. Daly. Both parents had four letter last names. I am sure that I could find other bazaar scraps of information that matches, but then you know what they say about coincidences. They are God's minor miracles where He wishes to remain anonymous.

Dad was too young for World War I and too old for World War II and I think that he felt left out. He did join the merchant marines for awhile, but that was short lived. He absolutely loved the ocean and boats. He became a self taught navigator and bought a 36 foot boat which we took into Puget Sound and toured the San Juan Islands. We spent entire summers on "Babe", as it slept six easily. We took my black cat and our gold fish along and my brother and I collected bottles in the various harbors to pay for the movies in town and other goodies. Mother wasn't as fond of boating as Dad, but she was a good sport and loved going into the many quaint towns that we visited and we even traveled to Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Once we lost my black cat which had the oh so original name of Blacky. A local fisherman found him hiding under the dock where he must wedged himself in his efforts to catch a fish from the many schools of minnows that we used to see all of the time. You hardly see them anymore, not like we used to. My, but I was glad to find my cat. Once my brother caught a wild rabbit and talked Mother into letting him keep it because I had a cat and he didn't. The next morning he awoke in his bunk screaming because his rabbit was bleeding and hurt. He had taken it to bed with him just as I took my cat and he thought he must have rolled over on his pet during the night. It turned out that the rabbit was pregnant and decided to have her litter in his sleeping bag. As you can imagine, my brother was beside himself.

My brother and I were both born in Seattle at Providence Hospital and we grew up in Ballard, which is about seven miles from downtown Seattle. I grew up in back of my parents first rented grocery store, but by the time my brother was born, my parents had bought a little brick house just a block away. Later they built a larger store about six blocks away and it became quite successful, with Mother running the grocery part and Dad running the meat market. We children used to love getting wieners from Dad so that we could roast them over the incinerator outside in back. Later, my brother joined the navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea. He became an accomplished pianist and played with some bands for base dances. He worked in grocery stores and was a projectionist in a movie theater, but his greatest love was history which was his major in college. He attended the University of Washington with a history major. Most of his friends knew my brother as Joe. He married a Japanese girl that he met when he was in the navy and brought her home to America. My two children adored Sueko or Sue, as we called her. She returned to Japan for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that she missed her own country. They did not have children and Sue never returned to the United States.

Alfred J. Daly, Marcus' father, was a native of Troy, New York. He was born March 18, 1873. He received his A.B. degree from Williams college in 1893 and later studied law. In 1899, he settled in Nome, Alaska. He served as assistant United States Attorney for a vast territory in Alaska and assisted in holding the first term of court in Nome in 1899. He served under Presidents Cleveland and McKinley's administration. He practiced law for many years in Nome and was a prominent member of the Nome bar and a lawyer of great respect.
