186. CLAUDE DAYTON6 LAKE (ILA HENDERSON5, JOHN AARON4, ILA3, GEORGE B.2, WILLIAM1) was born March 01, 1908 in Marion County, WV, and died April 12, 1975. He married DESSIE MAUDE HAWKINS August 10, 1929, daughter of WILLIAM HAWKINS and ANNA HUFFMAN. Notes for C
LAUDE DAYTON LAKE:
Claude worked in the Grant Town coal mines as a young man and also for the State Road Commission. He retired from the Fairmont Box Shop with 25 years service. He and Dessie lived in the Bunner Ridge area until 1947, when they moved to East Grafton Road near Fairmont, West Virginia. Dessie was the daughter of William and Anna Huffman Hawkins.

Claude and Dessie were married by the Rev. W. R. Moyer in very unusual circumstances. Their plan was to be married in the Bethel Methodist Church on Grassy Run (Fairmont, WV) after the regular evening services. However, Rev. Moyer dismissed church early and with his congregation motored about half a mile and met the bride and bridegroom at the fork of Grassy Run and Pricketts Creek. About 50 friends witnessed the ceremony as the couple were married while sitting in their car.

WHAT IS A DAD

Dads come in all shapes and sizes. We have no choice in the selection for ourselves. If God in his great wisdom allowed me to pick my dad, he would have to be something like this:

He would have long wavy hair and sparkling eyes, he would be six feet tall. He would take me on long hikes through the woods, he would teach me the joy of nature, the beauty of a flower, the peace of a trickling stream. He would show me the excitement of the hunter, the stealth of the fisherman.

He would worry over me as I grew up, lose sleep over me when I came home late at night, wish me well when I struck out on my own. He would give me his last dollar and pretend he still had a pocketful, even though I knew better. He would love his grandchildren and his great grandchildren and would teach them the excitement of life that he had shared with me. He would see my shortcomings but never murmur a complaint. He would give advice on every subject known to man, but when I made up my mind to something, he would pretend that it was his own idea.

He would love his wife of 57 years and refer to her as "Mom". He would sign his cards to her as "your man Friday".

If God allowed us to keep him into his 79th year, we would complain that was not nearly long enough. He would smile on this crowd here today and say "be happy - we have had a great time together."

I would call him Dad, but the whole world would know him as Lester Lake.
