Michael always used his mother's maiden name and his mother also used the name Lake instead of the name McAlpine. There was a bit of family speculation as to why this was, but perhaps it had more to do than anything else with the fact that Michael McAlpine and Lucile (spelled with one "L" in most places) parted early and Michael went off to the Civil War in Spain and was killed there.
