Anthony and wife Margaret sold it back to Watson Nov, 1745.
Dec 1743: Anthony of King William bought 200 acres on branch of Byrd Creek. Gift to son John in May, 1747
Jun 1744: Anthony of King William [St. John's Parish] bought 200 acres from Thomas Stone on the Great Byrd Creek. I believe this was his home plantation; he will now be "of Goochland County". Apr 1749: He added 50 acres bought from Edward Rice. By May 1769, Edward Rice's will reveals that Zachariah Haden is living on this land. In Oct, 1774 Zachariah & wife Elizabeth sold 250 acres, both properties devised [willed] to Zachariah by his father Anthony Haden, to neighbor John Hopkins.
Nov 1745: Anthony Haden of Goochland County bought 200 acres from Richard Brown, also on Byrd Creek. Gift to son Joseph in Jan of 1756, Anthony now of St Paul's Parish, Hanover County.
May 1748: Anthony of Goochland bought 141 acres on Byrd Creek from Henry Nash. In Sept of 1749, he added to this property, buying 55 acres from Francis Thurston who had previously purchased the 55 acres from Henry Nash. Nov of 1755, both properties were a gift to son William Haden; Anthony now living in Hanover County.
After moving to Hanover County sometime between Sept of 1749 and Nov of 1755, Anthony Haden also made deeds of gifts of slaves to daughters, Rachel Johnson and Ruth Ferris, and to Ann Rea, his granddaughter and daughter of Elizabeth Rea.
I know of no proof of children other than these named in the deeds of gifts. John, who received his land in 1747 was surely oldest and was given the land on the occasion of his marriage; he was likely between 21-25 years old, surely born before 1726. No marriage records of sons William and Joseph have been found, but they would be at least 21 at the time of their gifts in order to own land so they were both born prior to 1734. Since Zachariah did not receive a gift of land, it's possible he was younger than William and Joseph; also probable that he lived on the home plantation after Anthony moved to Hanover County. The youngest son getting the home place when his brothers have already received gifts of land is not unprecedented. The fact that Zachariah had the only property that had not been previously given or sold, would certainly indicate there were no other sons.
The husbands of Rachel and Ruth are named in the deeds of gift; Anthony neglected to mention the name of Elizabeth's husband. In this particular case, he gave the slave to his granddaughter with some of the income from the slave to go to his daughter - a way to keep her husband from having possession of the slave as he would have had if the slave was given directly to Elizabeth. Anthony may not have been happy with this marriage.
Anthony was certainly deceased by 1774 when Zachariah sold the home plantation. He left a Will that has never been found. In 1763, Anthony was listed on an extant tax list in Hanover County, so probably his last residence was there. I don't believe any evidence of Anthony has been found following the tax list.
Another interesting question is why Anthony, no longer a young man, moved from Goochland County to Hanover County away from his sons. There are also extant Processioning lists from St. Paul's Parish in Hanover at the time Anthony lived there and his name is not found as a property owner, although other Hadens are living there and have been appearing in the Parish records since 1719. Did he have relatives in Hanover? Or did he possibly remarry a widow and live with her on her inherited plantation? Look at this_..
Appeared on GC-Hanover Co VA Queries Forum 19 Mar 2001. John Clement, yeoman & his wife Isabelle lived in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co. Clement's will probated in Hanover in 1749. Isabelle executrix. The widow married Anthony Haden. Follow up by me with author of query stated the data came from a pedigree chart in the Clement/Wright vertical file, Thornton Public Library, Oxford (Granville) NC in 1994. No other proof. Son of John & Isabelle Clement, Simon, had lived in Granville Co NC in the 1760's. Simon b. ca 1730. Other children of John & Isabelle were John, Stephen who predeceased his father, and William. Simon received land from his father; others rec'd shillings. Was he eldest, or youngest not yet provided for? If he was eldest, Isabelle couldn't have been born later than say 1710 and may have been 10-15 years older if Simon was youngest, making her contemporary in age with Anthony Haden. Anthony did move to St. Paul's Parish. Likely Isabelle was past child-bearing age when/if this marriage took place. The Clement researcher had no information re possible children of this second marriage of the widow Isabelle.
There are definitely suggestions here for new research concerning Anthony Haden. I have not re-examined the Hanover Processioning lists to see where Clement might have been. I have not yet tried to further research the Clement family for clues. Possibly there are other deeds in Henrico Co since the daughter Ruth was gifted there. It's interesting that Anthony traveled to both Goochland & Henrico Courts to acknowledge these gifts himself; he was certainly able-bodied. Anything and everything, little as it is, about Hanover County needs to be examined during the period 1749, when Anthony's last record occurs in Goochland, until some years after 1774, when Zachariah sold Anthony's last acreage in Goochland.
Children of Margaret Douglas and Anthony Haden are:
+John M. Haden, b. 10 May 1723, d. 1817, Campbell County, Virginia.
