Jacob Johnson (son of Jacob Johnson and Mary Waller) was born in New Bern District, Craven County, North Carolina, and died Abt. April 1808 in Craven County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Pearce, daughter of Edmund Pearce and Rachel Hill.

Jacob I bought, sold, and received grants of land in the 1700's, mostly along Swift Creek, and was appointed Justice by Gov.Caswell in 1777.On the 19th day of June 1749, Edmund Pearce of Beaufort County sold Jacob Johnson of Craven County 200 acres on the north sideof Swift Creek. On the 19th day of January 1957, Jacob received a grant for 100 acres also one the north side of Swift Creek. He purchased other lands on the same stream. On the 9th day of November 1784, a bill was introduced in CravenCounty to establish a town on the land of Jacob Johnson. It was known as Swift Creek. Later it was called Vanceboro after Governor Zebulon B. Vance made a speech at Swift Creek campaigning for the governorship (N.C. Colonial Records by Saunders, Vol. 19, p.435). From Revolutionary War Records, Jacob Johnson calls himself a soldier receiving army pay."(Jacob) owned the whole village of Vanceboro and the surrounding country." - Mrs. Mary Nelson Smith, Jacob'sgreat-granddaughter quoted from "Our Family Genealogy" by Mrs. Jeannette Cox St. Armand.
