Notes on the background of the Marston name (Mary Lovering Holman,Marston English Ancestry (1929), pg. 31.) :
at pg. 60 the author says that Marstons originated from Damblainville,Calvados, Normandy, France. He says: "In 1086 Robert of Rhuddlan held four hides in Marston St. Lawrence, co. Hampton, of Hugh Earl of Chester;and in 1081 William the Conqueror confirmed to the abbey of St-Evroul the church of Marston given by Robert of Ruddlan with the consent of Hugh earl of Chester. Robert of Ruddlan also held Byfield, co. Northampton, of earl Hugh; and he gave that church and his interest in the church of Damblainville to St-Evroul. Humphrey de Merestona gave to St-Evroul all his land in the demesne of Damblainville and land at Byfield." (Williamthe Conqueror, was duke of Normandy before he became king William I ofEngland.) The name de Merestona became de Merston before 1166 in Bedfordshire. By 1226 the name had become de Marston for some.
