1. WILLIAM HENRY¹ SHEPHERD¹ was born Abt. 1818 in ,,Canada ², and died February 1865 in ,Ashtabula Co,OH ³. He married LUCRETIA FLEMING⁴ 1840 ⁵. She was born February 20, 1820 in Catawissa Twp, Columbia,PA ⁶, and died March 03, 1893 in Brant,Saginaw,MI ⁷.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY SHEPHERD:
Birth: Born in Canada per his son, Thomas', death record (Shia Co, MI Rush twp). If family on 1850 census is accurate (believe it to be so), he was 32 years old in 1850 which puts his birth at approximately 1818.

TRY: Muskingum Co, OH census for 1860. Also try to find birth location of son(s) in 1851 in this county.

LAND RECORDS: Possibly is W. H. Shephard found on 1877 Plat record (Atlas at Michigan Library) for Brant Twp, Saginaw Co, MI owning 80 acres in Section 32, however now believe that W. H. to have possibly been son of Hiram Jefferson Shephard who was married to Mariah Holmes.

QUIT-CLAIM DEED: dated March 17, 1891 places Wm. H Shephard as a resident of Saginaw County, MI. (his son?)

MIDDLE NAME: Henry per Ken Gibbons who found records from Ashtabula County, OH (possibly Saybrook Twp. as Lucretia moved from Saybrook Twp. to Harpersfield Twp. (both in Ashtabula Co.) shortly after his death).

BIRTH: Born in PA per her son, Thomas', death record from Rush Twp, Shiawassee Co, MI. Also found her tombstone in the Brant Twp. Cemetery in Row 13 of the south section that had date of birth and death. Lucretia Shephard (Mother).

NAME: Called "Crete" per Ken Gibbons (kengib@toolcity.net).

KEN GIBBONS INFOR: Ken passed along the following background of his search for this family.

According to the Family Bible, she married a Shepherd. No other name given. Finally, he found a Lucretia married to William Shoppard. Everything except the last name seemed to be correct. The census take made a huge mistake (believe he is referring to the 1850 Crawford Co, PA census). There was a Shoppard family that lived near the Shepherds, so he assumes that was why William's surname was misspelled. Later, he found another family paper that had the words, "moved to Ohio" scrawled after Lucretia's name. He then passed on the information on her family including her 16 siblings that I have added to the family file.

1870 Harpersfield Township, Ashtabula County, OH Census:
Shepherd, Lucretia (head of household) age 57 - wrong, she was 50 that year.

Per Ken, Amanda was not listed, she may have married. A woman from the
courthouse also sent him the name of Oliver/Olive/Olivia was one of the
children but that name doesn't appear in Lucretia's home. He believes that the entire family moved to Michigan shortly after 1970.

At some point, Lucretia's brother, Lawrence Fleming jr. of Geneva Twp. (OH but which county?) hired Lucretia to care for his home and his two motherless children. The arrangement didn't last long as Lucretia took her brother to court. There was one trial...and later perhaps a second one. This information is from Ashtabula Co, OH records. Ken Gibbons is waiting for the snail mail that has full details of the case. He only had summary at this time. It appears that Lucretia was suing Lawrence for $8,000. He will be sending copies when he can. At any rate, it appears that Lucretia moved to Michigan and Lawrence moved to Nebraska shortly after this dispute.
