Notes for I
STVAN (STEPHEN) ALOIS BENDES:
STEPHEN INFO: Linda Webb (granddaughter of Stephen Bendes-2001):
She provided names of parents as Lorinc Bendes & Julianna Nemeth. She said Steve was baptised in Acsalag in Transdanubian, Hungary on 12 Dec 1888. He was baptized Istvan (Stephen) Bendes. His godmother was Julianna Pinter and Godfather was Istvan Csiszar. Priest was Sandor (Alex) Szemethy. In the Roman Catholic Church in the Gyor Diocese in Sopron.
Info provided to her by 83 year old aunt. The word Zseller is used in connection with Lorinc Bendes' name. It is an identifier that means cotter..rural laborer occupying a cottage and sometimes a small holding of land, usually in return for services. The word napszamos is used in connection with the godfather's name. It, too, is an identifier that means he was a day laborer.

There were two sisters of Peter and Stephen as well, according to her aunt. However, she could not recall their names.

According to the aunt, Peter was already in Ohio when Lorain, OH wanted to start a Hungarian Brass Band. He wrote to Stephen and told him to come to the U.S. to start this band. Stephen had studied music in the military band (He had entered the Army Music Conservatory in Hungary (Kisber?) at age 14 and served 4 years in service where he learned to play every instrument. He entered the Obelin Music Conservatory i 1913 in Ohio.

He was then invited to come to Perth Amboy, NJ then invited to Franklin, NJ to start a band for the Zinc Co in 1917. In 1918, he organized the Franklin Band. They gave him $500 for uniforms for the band. In 1918, he organized the Franklin Band. After WWI, many Hungarians returned to their homeland but Stephen went to Passaic with his family. He returned to Franklin in 1925 and stayed until his death in 1965.

He had lived in Carteret, NJ, Perth Amboy, NJ, Bonhampton, NJ, Chrome, NJ, and Passaic, NJ. In each of these towns, he started Hungarian Brass Bands that he conducted and gave lessons to each member. The bands continued as he moved from town to town as he always taught someone to conduct the band before he moved. He started the Wheeler Foundry Co Band in Carteret, Hastings Band on the Hudson, NY. While in Passaic, he taught the Rakiczi Society Band, Russian Society Band and the Ukranian Band of Elizabeth, NJ.

In 1930-1935, he started the Franklin Boys Band. Today, this band has blossomed into the Franklin Community Band that still exists today. The Franklin Community Band was actually begun in 1880, but it had stopped for awhile during the war and Stephen's Boys Band was an offshoot. Stephen gave music lessons on all instruments. He also organized the Clover Club Dance Orchestra. Linda's husband is President and business manager of the Franklin Community Band in 2001. Both of their sons were in this band and she was a majorette for many years. Their oldest son is a professional musician. He studied trumpet as did Stephen Bendes and today (2001) is contracted with a band and plays on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Stephen was a printer by trade and had his own business called Bendes Press located in Franklin, NJ (07416 Main Street). Franklin is a small zinc mining town, now called the Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World. He could also do plumbing, installed furnaces and was a fireman in charge of the boilers for the Franklin Zinc Mines. He also did wallpapering as a spare job.

Immigration: Came to US in 1911 and came through Ellis Island according to Linda. He became a citizen on Feb 21 1924 and lived at 123 Parker Avenue, Passaic NJ at that time. He arrived Dec. 10.1906 from Hamburg Germany on the vessel Kaiserin Augusta Victoria. He went to OH to live with family of Joe Kostyu.

Stephen had a tatoo on his left hand. It was a Hungarian emblem that was never finished. Something was going on outside while he was having it down and everyone ran outside and he never returned to have it finished. He was 5'6" tall. His obituary listed a surviving sister named Eliz. Kuzma. One of the sisters lived with Steve's neice in Acsalag, Hungary after she broke her hip.

WORKED: Aunt Margaret remembered that he, too, worked in the mines with Peter in Ohio.

Daughter, Betty, also recalled that her father "had the Franklin Boys marching band about 1935. He was also a printer - had his own print shop in our basement for years. Those were the good years for all of us."
