Notes for FREDERICK STANLEY:
Both Frederick and his father Timothy served from Connecticut in the American Revolution. According to family tradition, Frederick enlisted while under age. Timothy was taken prisoner at Fort Washington and died in captivity on the British prison ship "Grosvenor". After his discharge in 1777 Frederick returned home to Litchfield, suffering from smallpox.
Frederick took up the mercantile business and by 1799 had a country store at Brooklyn, Conn, having lived earlier in Windham. He spent his later years (1828-1836) in New York City as a merchant, and in retirement, living with his daughter Mary Eliza (Stanley) Talcott. It was probably during this period that he sat for the portrait. He died 19 December 1842 in Oswego, New York, predeceasing his second wife by three years.
