I am researching the LAMONTAGNE family. I've traced back to Renaud Bacquet of Montoye, Diocese of Bordeaux, Gironde, France, married to Jeanne Monsus of Montoye, but that's where the trail goes cold. I do not speak or read French so my chances of obtaining additional information without help are slim. The following is from a terrific web site entitled: LAMONTAGNE genealogy (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lane/5638/)
Francois BACQUET was born in 1636 in La Montjoie, diocese of Bordeaux, (Gironde), Lot-et-Garonne, France. He was the son of Renaud BACQUET & Jeanne MONSUS.
He arrived in Quebec in 1665 as a soldier in the Carignan Regiment from France. It was common practice for soldiers of this era to take on a DIT name and so Francois became known as BACQUET dit LAMONTAGNE. After a five year term of service, he had the option of returning home to France or to remain in the New World as a settler and receive a land grant - which he chose to do.
His parcel of land was in La Durantaye (known today as St.Michel de Bellechasse), in Montmagny county, PQ. It was between that of Francois MARQUET to the Northeast and Bergeron to the Southwest. It was the sixth property west of Olivier Morel's which bordered on the St.Lawrence River.
Francois married Anne PHILIPPE on 1671/11/24 at Notre Dame de Quebec in Quebec City. Their marriage was witnessed by Olivier MOREL and Michel LECOURT, and the priest was Thomas MOREL.
Anne PHILIPPE was born in 1653 in Nogent-sur-Seine, diocese of Troyea (Aube) in Champagne, France to Jacques PHILLIPPE & Anne AUDIGER. She arrived in Quebec in 1671 as part of the "Filles du Roi" program. Along with the King's 50 livres, her dowry included another 300 livres of belongings. She passed a marriage contract with Francois DESBAUPINS but it was quickly aned and she soon married Francois BACQUET dit LAMONTAGNE. The couple had 4 children - only one of whom had descendants.
Francois died at the age of 65 and was buried in Quebec City on 1701/04/10. His widow Anne eventually remarried her neighbour Francois MARQUET on 1709/01/20 in Quebec City.
The descendants of Francois & Anne BACQUET dit LAMONTAGNE number in the thousands today. Over the past 300 years most have gravitated toward the sole use of the last name of LAMONTAGNE. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
