"The Gilner Family of Broolkyn, NY

I am researching the Gilners in New York and most are around the Brooklyn area. They are of German descent.
They first appear in the 1860 census of Brooklyn, NY,
John Gilner,wife Mary (Bwlksman). Children, Mary,Louis,Hanah,Dorethea,Charles, John, all born in Prussia.
My great grandaddy is Louis. He married Mary Scheffel around 1865, Children are,Elizabeth,Mary,Louis Peter, Charles Martin,(Peter Nicholaus, my grandaddy),William John,George Albert,Henry Charles,James, Katherine, she married Frank Nolan.
I am trying to find where they came from in Germany, I feel like there may have been a name change to English, but I don't know for sure.
I have all the census records,and a lot of information on this line.
