Eli Ableman (b. September 06, 1923, d. January 06, 1991)
Eli Ableman
Eli Ableman (son of Harry Ableman and Jenny Schwartz)23, 24, 25 was born September 06, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio, and died January 06, 1991 in Columbus, Ohio. He married (1) Esther Berman on Abt. 1958 in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of Isadore Berman.
Notes for Eli Ableman: I know Eli visited with you a number of years ago before he was even married. He did get married to Esther Berman who had been previously married and had a daughter Renee who adored Eli. Esther and Eli had twin boys, Michael who is married to Sue and lives in Texas with their three children, twin girl and boy and another boy. All three of them are under 3 yrs old, and Scott who is married to Debbie and lives in Virginia with a son and a daughter. (e-mail from Charlotte Ableman to her cousin, Yonina Lamdan)
Eli Ableman's obituary in the Columbus Dispatch of January 7, 1991, lists his daughter Renee and her husband, Noel Dickson, of Cincinnatti, Ohio, and his granddaughter, Anna Greer Disckson among his mourners. The two sons, Scott and Michael and their wives were also there.
Eli was a graduate of Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio, the city in which he was born and bred, by his parents, Harry Ableman and Jenny Schwartz. He had three sisters, Molly Ableman, Mimi Ableman Fisher and Charlotte Ableman Braverman.
He had run the restaurant "The Upper Krust" in Columbus for many years.
Charlotte, Thanks for that info. I've added it to the files.......and it will be included in the next update. Interesting fact: I just realized that our great-grandmother, Leah Itzkowitz, was no doubt part of the same Itzkowitz family as the forefathers of the Harris family! They had changed their name officially from Itzkowitz to Harris, in Columbus! It was a known thing in those days, for "cousins" to marry.......thus the further connection between the Itzkowitz, aka Harris family, Greenbergs (my grandfather, Emil's, sister Adela, married Abraham Itzkowitz, and they were the ones who changed their name and their children were: Ben, Sam, Harry, Dave, Minnie!). Small world of familial connections in this world of genealogy!
Love, Yonina (email May 16, 2005) Esther Berman (my mother) lived from 1924 – 1989. She and my father Eli ran the Upper Krust restaurant in Columbus, Ohio for many years. It was a large, 300-seat jewish-style sandwich shop, which featured great overstuffed sandwiches, smoked fishes, and a few great traditional recipes like brisket with noodles and cabbage. Before the Upper Krust, central Ohio didn’t know what pastrami on rye was.
(e-mail from Scott Ableman to Yonina Lamdan May 2005) Wow! What an amazing memory you have. I do think I have a lot of my dad's curiosity in me. People also tell me I laugh just like him. Lucky, I guess.
Again, I will try to find pictures of my dad and digitize them. My greatest recollection of his Israel visit is a picture I remember of him and his friend (that would be Buzzy Cantor...see, my memory isn't bad either!) at the Dead Sea.
He did talk about you and the trip often, and I am puzzled by he never kept in touch.
He married my mom when he was 40-years-old and had twins in 1963 (by the way, it was quite unusual for a 40-year-old woman to have twins in those days).
I think life was quite hectic for them. My dad sold paint for a living until he decided to open up his restaurants. I don't know how much Scott filled you in, but the restaurants eventually went bankrupt, and that really defeated my dad. He never really recovered from the failure.
The money he did have went to us kids. He sent us to private Hebrew school and did everything he could to make sure we had what we needed to succeed.
My mom died in her sleep in 1989, and that was the final blow. The last two years of his life were pretty difficult. I spent a lot of time with him then, and he talked a lot about returning to Israel. Unfortunately, he was too sick.
I did promise him that I would take my children there -- and I have every intention of keeping my word.
Also, our son Isaac just sat for a photographer who is doing an exhibit on people who have the name Isaac. Supposedly it will be displayed somewhere in Israel. When I find out more I will let you know.
I travel a lot and our three kids keep us very active, but I will try to slowly send you pictures. The last few days have brought back a lot of fond memories -- and I owe you greatly for that. What you are doing will live on for generations. I've already showed the picture of Eli on the site to my kids and they agree with you -- I look a lot like him (actually, they don't believe it isn't me!).
Take care and we will keep in touch.
Love.
