Notes for Haley Scott Ableman: I know Eli visited with you a number of years ago before he was even married. He did get married to Esther Berman who had been previously married and had a daughter Renee who adored Eli. Esther and Eli had twin boys, Michael who is married to Sue and lives in Texas with their three children, twin girl and boy and another boy. All three of them are under 3 yrs old, and Scott who is married to Debbie and lives in Virginia with a son and a daughter. My sister Mimi lives in Dayton now after living 50 years. in Boston. (e-mail from Charlotte Ableman, aunt of Eli and Esther's children, Renee, Michael and Scott Ableman, to Yonina Lamdan, maternal cousin.)
Subject: Ethan: The Nightingale
Dear F.O.E.:
Hi friends, family and teachers:
Just wanted to let you know that Children's Chorus of Washington's performance of "The Nightingale" is featured in the Post's "Saturday's Child" today. Also at link below.
Thanks for looking!
The Mechanical Nightingale's Mom
Yonina, Thank you so much for contacting me. My Aunt Charlotte Braverman (Ableman) in Dayton, Ohio mentioned that a distant relative in Israel was working on a family tree, but I had no idea how serious an effort this was. I am in awe. I know so little of my own geneology on my father’s side… I’m trying to figure out how to print this so I can see how we’re related! Some anecdotes, updates, corrections:
Jenny was my grandmother. She died when I was six but I do have strong memories of her. She lived just a 1/2-mile away in Columbus in a house that my father bought for her.
Esther Berman (my mother) lived from 1924 – 1989. She and my father Eli ran the Upper Krust restaurant in Columbus, Ohio for many years. It was a large, 300-seat jewish-style sandwich shop, which featured great overstuffed sandwiches, smoked fishes, and a few great traditional recipes like brisket with noodles and cabbage. Before the Upper Krust, central Ohio didn’t know what pastrami on rye was.
Michael Ableman and I are twins, born in 1963. We actually were both named after Harry, but both have always used our middle names. I am Harley Scott, he is Howard Michael.
Michael lives in Dallas, Texas. His twins, Emma and Isaac, were born in 2000 (not 2003). Their younger brother Jonah was born in 2001 (yes – three kids in a year and a half!).
Michael has a degree in Advertising Management from Ohio University. He owns his own business called HoundDog, which does marketing consulting, promotions, marketing research and strategy for big consumer brands in the U.S. His e-mail address is mike.ableman@hounddog.net.
My sister Renee was raised by my father Eli, but she is Esther’s daughter from a previous marriage. Her maiden name is Renee Jaskulek. She was born in 1949. Renee has been a teacher in the Cincinnati area for over 30 years, including the last 25 years at Cincinnati Princeton High School.
Renee’s daughter Anna Dickson was born in 1980. She is a recent graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design. She is an award-winning photographer, and will soon be moving to New York to stake her career. She is working on building a web site of her work at www.annadickson.com.
My wife Debbie Shrager was born in 1963. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Northwestern University School of Law. She was a practicing attorney for the Enforcement Division of The National Labor Relations Board until 1998, when our daughter Hannah was born. In addition to being a great full-time mom, she is also now on the Board of Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, Virginia, and runs a small charitable foundation supporting arts enrichment programs for underprivileged children.
Our son Ethan Eli Ableman was born in 1995. Our daughter Hannah Brooke Ableman was born in 1998. If you visited ableman.net, then you already know plenty about them.
I grew up in Columbus, went to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (where Debbie and I met), and later to the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. We moved to the Washington DC area 13 years ago, and have been raising our family just 2 miles outside of DC in McLean, Virginia. We are very active members of the largest reform congregation in the state. I have worked in telecommunications and internet marketing for the last 15 years. I spend a little too much time keeping up the family web site.
Tell me about your grandmother and where everybody is from. I know so little!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/12/AR2005051200791.html Mike and I have never looked like anything but brothers, and while he is bigger than me, remember it's my web site. Of course I'll post the photos where I look better! ;-)
Many of the photos on Ableman.net are of Debbie's family -- the Shragers, and of my family on my mother's side. My mother Esther Berman Ableman had a brother (Jerry Berman) and a sister (Carol Cahn). Jerry never had kids. He is now 87 and lives in Dallas near Mike. Carol had three girls (LuAnne, Terry, and Linda), who produced quite a few cousins (Taylor, Michael, Mackenzie, Julie, Cassie, Lanie, Alexa), and most of them were at Jerry's 85th birthday party where all those photos were taken.
What other pieces of info are you missing? Debbie and I were married 8/5/90 in Philadelphia. My kids were both born here in Virginia and Mike's kids were all born in Dallas.

Mike was also very generous. You guys don't look identical at this point.......Mike, in the picture of them at the beach, looks very much like your dad, Eli...........You look slimmer and trimmer.............
email from Scott to Yonina April 12, 2007 Yes Yonina, we were both named after our grandfather Harry Ableman, who had recently died when we were born. However our parents called us by our middle names from the very beginning. I guess they just didn't love any of the "H" names.
Mazel tov on Tom's bar mitzvah. We are indeed learning how time flies. Ethan's bar mitzvah will be in 1 year -- next April 12. He is going on a retreat this weekend with the other 6th-graders at our synagogue to kick off their year of studying!
