Newton and his twin sister Mary E. Sims were raised by William Cookman in Roane Co. W.Va. The reason for this is uncertain and it is a guess that their parents were dead that that time.

Newton married Margaret Jane Hall from Calhoun County, W.Va. in 1864. They had one child Mary Susan Sims. Margaret divorced Newton about 1867.

Newton and Ruth White married in 1881 in Greene Co. PA. They had two children.

Newton and Ruth Sims divorced in 1902 while Ruth lived in Moundsville and Newton was in Calhoun Co. W.Va., and Newton remarried Arizona C. Schoolcraft and they had 2 children together, according to his pension records from the National Achives, Washington, D.C.

Newton joined the Union Army during the Civil War at the age of 16. Found that Newton served in the 9th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry, Company B, and his rank was Private, he than re-enlisted and the 9th Regiment and 5th Regiment became the 1st West Virginia Vet. Volunteers.

In 1866 Newton shot and killed a man in Charleston, W.Va and was sentenced to 18 years and served 14 1/2 years of that sentence. He was in the Moundsville Penitentiary, Moundsville, W.Va., for that 14 1/2 years until he got pardoned in February 1881.
