Descendants of John Landers

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 LANDERS, JR. (JOHN1) was born about 17395, and died about May 1825 in Granville County, NC5. He married MARY PARIS 1 Nov 1765 in Granville County, NC6,7. She was born about 1740, and died 1 Apr 1828 in Crawford County, IN7.

Notes for J
OHN LANDERS, JR.:
Listed as John Landres Jr. in Captain Andrew Hampton's company, Col. William Eaton's militia regiment, Granville County NC, 8 Oct 1754.

----------

Connie Marie McCasland suggests he was born abt. 1737 and was married to Mary Parrish abt. 1765 in Granville County, NC.

----------

One transcript of the Granville County Marriage Records say at John and Mary's wedding on 1 Nov. 1768, Jacob Slaughter was bondsman and Samuel Benton and Heinrich B- - - (German signature) were witnesses. Carroll Hayden also uses the 1768 date.

----------

John Landers entered (title for) 50 acres in Granville County, 1778; and 40 acres on Tar River, 1779.

----------

From the "Record of Wills" books 10, 15 and 16:

John Landers wills to wife Mary all land whereon I now live, stock, furniture for her lifetime or widowhood and, at her death or remarriage, all to be sold and divided to son William, son John, son Henry, son George Landers, each 1/4 and 1/4 to children of David Landers, namely Jinsey and Elvey Landers. Executors wife Mary, Thomas Jones, Isaac Slaughter. Witnesses Daniel Gooch, Sr. Thomas Gooch. Will dated 8 November 1824, signed John Landess his X mark and Mary Landers her X mark. Proved in Court May 1825. The inventory and sale of estate, which brought about $97, was recorded on 11 June 1825.

(How many fourths one can fit into a whole is left to our imagination!)

----------
From Roger Rice Landers:

DOB: About 1738. The NSDAR Record Copy of Application # 704327 by Mary Cuzzort Clipp for John Landis (dated Oct 1984) shows the DOB of John (Landis) Landers to be abt. 1720. This is believed to be an error for the following reasons:

1. The date of death is shown as 1825 (NSDAR # 704327). If this is true, John Landers was 105 years old at the time of his death. While this is possible, it is not probable.

2. John Landers was the son of John Landers and Frances. The will of Frances Landress (Landers) list the following children: John, Abraham, Joseph, Jacob and daughters Mary and Betty, NC Archives, Granville County Wills, Box 044.801.24, 5 June 1769.

3. John Landers and Frances Landers are major purchasers of personal property at the Estate Sale of John Landers, as was Andrew Hampton, recorded in Granville County Court September 1757 (Estate Records of John Landers, NC Archives, Granville County Estate Records Box 44.508.109, John Landers 1757).

4. The Muster Roll of the Regiment in Granville County, under the Command of Col. William Eaton, 8 October 1754, Captain Andrew Hampton’s Company list the following: John Landres, Sergeant; John Landres, Junr. (State Records of North Carolina, Vol. XXII, page 370, 379-380)

5. John Landers, Jr's age is estimated as follows: In 1754 John Landers, Jr. was in the militia. In order to serve he had to be at least sixteen years old (The Source by Szucs and Luebking, page 209-210). 1754-16= 1739.

DOD: Before May 1825; Will of John Landers 8 November 1824, Inventory 11 June 1825, recorded in May Court 1825.

----------

Wife: Mary Paris: DOB: abt 1730-40 (NSDAR # 704327)
DOD: aft. 1830 (NSDAR # 704327)
Marriage: Marriage Bond Granville County, NC, 1 November 1765

REFERENCE to Ancestor's Revolutionary War Service: NSDAR # 704327; State Records of North Carolina Vol. XXII, page 178-179. List of Persons who took the Oath of Allegiance to the State in County Line District, listed as John Sanders.

----------

LAND owned by John Landers (Jr). In 1757 John Landers inherited(?) from his father 238 acres on both sides of the Tar River. In 1779 John Landish obtained a grant of land containing 48 acres on the Tar River (Grant # 164, Book40, p.221). In 1782 he sold 146 acres to John Potter (Granville Co. NC Deed Bk. O p. 193. (Note: the land described in this deed is identical to a portion of the land purchased by John Sr. on the north side of the Tar River).

On the remaining land, 140 acres was taxed consistently to John Landers until 1822. The 140 acres was in the possession of Mary Landers in the Tar River district as of 1825 (Granville Co. NC Tax List for 1825). George Landers was listed next to Mary and was not taxed for any land. George Landers sold his 1/5 share of his fathers estate to Nicholas Jones 31 Oct 1826 (Granville Co. Deed Bk. 6 p. 132).

----------

There was another John Landers living in the lower part of Bedford County, TN, at about this same time ("our" John was in the northern part). He married Susannah Harmon, and one son is known as Henry Harmon Landers, brother of Christopher Landers/Landis. This family is mentioned often in the Compendium of American Genealogy.

Notes for M
ARY PARIS:
Some feel that Mary Paris died after 1830. DAR Application #704327 indicates that she was the "female over 90" listed in the 1830 Crawford County, IN census (living in the home of William Landers).

Children of J
OHN LANDERS and MARY PARIS are:
5. i.   DAVID3 LANDERS, d. about 1812, Granville County, NC.
6. ii.   WILLIAM LANDISS, b. about 1769, Granville County, NC; d. Aft. 1850, Crawford County, IN.
iii.   JOHN LANDERS III, b. about 1770, Granville County, NC8; m. BIDDY BRINKLEY, 1 Sep 1795, Granville County, NC9.
  Notes for JOHN LANDERS III:
It has been suggested that John III was born about 1785, but that would have him only 10 at the time of his marriage. He is probably earlier in the sequence of children. Since his father's will lists the sons as "William, John, Henry and George", he was probably born between William and Henry (between 1764 and 1778). There was another John, son of Joseph and Sarah, born in 1785.

7. iv.   HENRY LANDERS, b. about 1775, Granville County, NC; d. 8 Sep 1823, Landersville, Lawrence County, AL.
8. v.   GEORGE T. LANDERS, b. Jun 1780, Granville County, NC; d. 31 Aug 1856, Lunenberg, Arkansas.

3. ABRAHAM2 LANDERS (JOHN1) was born about 174310, and died Bef. 22 Aug 1827 in Bedford County, TN10. He married ? ?10.

Notes for A
BRAHAM LANDERS:
Bought 202 acres of land 13 August 1764 from John Ross and sold it in 1766 to Joseph Landess (Landers). Abraham signed the deed.

It seems likely that this Abraham is the one who first acquired land and settled in Bedford County, TN.
Several other Landisses followed him there, or stopped there on their journeys west.

In December 1794 Abram Landis secured a grant to 2879 acres in the middle district of Tennessee on Duck River. It was to this tract, or its vicinity, that all the migrations of Landis families from North Carolina seem to have pointed.

Roger Rice Landers believes he may also be the father of the Abraham Landers who married Susanna Gooch.

Child of A
BRAHAM LANDERS and ? ? is:
9. i.   THOMAS3 LANDERS, b. 1801, North Carolina.

4. JOSEPH2 LANDERS (JOHN1) was born about 1745 in Granville County, NC10, and died Bef. 1830 in Bedford County, TN10. He married SARAH ? about 177210. She was born Bef. 175510, and died Bef. 183010.

Notes for J
OSEPH LANDERS:
Substantial research on this family has been done by Rodger Rice Landers.

Dorothy Landers Fisher and Carroll Hayden give the birth date of Joseph as 1740.

Joseph Landess took an Oath of Allegiance 30 May 1778, Dutch District, Granville County, North Carolina.

Joseph Landis entered (title for) 500 acres, Granville County on Beaver Dam Creek, 1778.

In 1816 Joseph bought 50 acres of land and moved to Bedford County , TN.

Joseph is probably buried in the Landers-Cooper Cemetery in Longview, north of Shelbyville, Bedford County, TN. This cemetery is located on land owned first by Joseph, and then by George S. Landers.

Children of J
OSEPH LANDERS and SARAH ? are:
10. i.   ABRAHAM3 LANDERS, b. 1773, Granville County, NC; d. about 1863, Bedford County, TN.
  ii.   MARY LANDERS, b. about 1776, Granville County, NC10; m. JOHN DONALDSON COOKE, 20 Jan 1794, Granville County, NC11; b. Bet. 1755 - 177412.
  Notes for MARY LANDERS:
Also found in the 1790 Granville County, NC census.

  Notes for JOHN DONALDSON COOKE:
Recorded in the Granville County Marriage Book.

11. iii.   GEORGE S. LANDERS, b. 1781, Granville County, NC; d. Bef. Apr 1849, Bedford County, TN.
  iv.   FRANCES LANDERS, b. 178512,13; d. Bef. 187413.
12. v.   JOHN LANDERS, b. 1785, Granville County, NC; d. Bef. 1868, Granville County, NC.
