Notes for B
ENJAMIN BAXTER LANDERS:
Said by Roger Rice Landers to have been born April, 1865 in Concord Township, Washington County, MO.

Notes thanks to Connee Landers McCasland:

About 1870, after being orphaned, went to stay with a widow named Sally Hale. Moved to Wallowa County, Orgeon, in 1909.

From cousin Doris Edwards:

Grandpa was probably about three years old when his father, Elijah, died of gangrene. No one knows how he got the wound. Elisa then hired a man to take her and the kids in a wagon from near Springfield in Dent County to Iron Mountian, Missouri. The wagon got stuck in a creek and the man she had hired to drive got mad and left her. They huddled under the bank of the river and a man came by the next day and took them to his place. Elisa died shortly after. There was a family of seven boys and two girls, whose names were unknown, who died when they were quite young. I had a volunteer look in Washington County for cemetery records for Landers, but he didn't find anything. They probably didn't have headstones. The boys had to separate and go live with different families after the death of their mother.

Again, from Doris after asking why Grandpa Landers moved to Oregon:

I don't really know, but I'll tell you what Paul Landers told us that Grandpa had told him. After Benjamin and Mary Turnbull were married he went to work on a farm for $25 per month and a house in which to live. They later rented a farm for several years. Then they moved to Irondale where Benjamin went back to work in the mines. Mary died soon after, on the 25th of June, 1908, at the age of 37, after giving Benjamin seven children, six boys and a girl.

Later Benjamin married Sara Katherine Brooks (Smith). Benjamin, his oldest son John, John's wife Essie, and their son Paul headed west and settled in Powatka, Oregon. Benjamin then sent for Sara, three more of his boys, George, William (Emmett), and Jesse (Edward). His only daughter had died earlier at the age of four while he and Mary were still together. He also sent for one of Sara's children. Traveling from Wallowa to Powatka meant fifteen miles by wagon or, in the winter, by sled.

Benjamin went to work for Mr. Downerd for $40 per month, including a house and a cow for milk. He later rented the place from Downerd and lived there for several years. He then leased a farm in the foothills outside of Wallowa, where he worked on the railroad, in the mill, and on several farms in the area.

On the 27th of September (about 1927) Benjamin and Sara moved to southern Oregon, where his youngest son Clifford lived. His son George and George's wife Marjorie and their daughter Auline, who was then ten years old, accompanied them. Also accompanying them was Benjamin's son, Jesse Edward, and his wife Nancy. Marjorie died soon after their arrival in southern Oregon at the age of thirty. Four years later, George married Ethel Mae Hylton (Wakefield).
