John Baptist Lane was the son of James and Elizabeth (Betty) Petty Lane. He was born in Greene County, Arkansas on June 7, 1841. He and his family, along with many other family members, moved to Travis County, Texas about 1847. After his father, James, died in 1847/8, and his mother remarried, John ran away from home and moved, it is thought, to the Dallas area. This was about 1855. From then, until 1861, there is little known about John's life. Then, on December 21, 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate Army from Texas. After the war John moved back to the Dallas area, where he became an accomplished fiddle player, and played for the dance halls in Dallas. He married his first wife Mary (Patton ?) between 1868 and 1870, and this was the beginning of the John Baptist Lane Family Tree. |
