Notes for ESTHER HELEN STONE: Esther attended School #38 in Scranton, Pa. and when she graduated from high school she got a job at a lumber company. She later took a job as a bookkeeper. When she was a little girl her father brought her family to visit a great aunt. They rode in a horse-drawn buggy, and she remembers her great aunt never wore shoes and smoked a clay pipe. During World War I she worked making helmets for the soldiers. In 1924 Esther went to live with her sister in New York City. She met her husband on a ship to Central America when she was going on vacation. He was a radio operator for the ship. (From a newsletter interview Esther gave at her home, The McAuley Residence in Albany, N.Y. in November, 1996) "Esther Stone and her sister Ruth Stone were twins. Esther outlived all her 9 brother and sisters reaching 95 years of age. Although she never had children of her own, her niece, Barbara Ann Cadden, was raised mostly by her, and Barbara "considered Esther more of a mother to her for her entire life than her natural mother" Mildred, Esther's older sister. Aunt Esther's house in St. Petersburg, Fla. was always a spring or summer retreat while growing up for both myself and my brother, David, as well as our parents. I visited there right up until she was forced to come back north in 1996 due to ill health, and had to sell the house. She lived out her remaining two years in Albany, N.Y. at a wonderful senior citizens home that her niece Marilyn Stone and grand-neice Caroline Smith found for her and decorated in her favorite furniture brought north from Florida. In the 1980's and 90's, she loved to travel when possible to hear her grand-nephews, myself, my wife Sally, and my brother David sing opera performances. In August 1997, five months before her death, she attended the wedding of her grand-nephew David Langan in Darien, Connecticut, dancing the night away with whoever would escort her onto the dancing floor."(Kevin Langan, April, 2000) |
