Notes for KEVIN JAMES LANGAN: " I was born in New York City at St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village. During my early years we lived in Syracuse, N.Y. (1955-56), Hackensack, NJ (1956-58), Fair Lawn, NJ (1958-59), Tyler Texas (1959-63), and Middletown, NJ (1964-1973). I graduated from Middletown High School in 1973. I attended New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass. and Indiana University, receiving a B.M. (1977) and M.M. (1980) in Voice both with High Distinction. I met my wife, Sally, at Indiana in 1977, where we studied with the same voice teacher. I went on to have a career in classical music as a opera singer appearing with most of the major opera companies in North America, including the Metropolitan Opera (debut in 1990), San Francisco Opera, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Fe, Denver, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Houston, Austin, Dallas, Omaha, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington D.C., and Miami, as well as a number of opera companies in Europe, including Amsterdam, Antwerp, Lyon, and Geneva. I also gave major recitals at The Wigmore Hall in London, England in 1979, and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York in 1984. I have appeared on five opera video/T.V. (PBS) broadcasts, four from San Francisco Opera; SAMSON ET DALILAH (1980), AIDA (1981), ORLANDO FURIOSO (1989), TURANDOT (1993), and one from Santa Fe Opera; EMMELINE (1996), and on two major opera recordings, Mozart's LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, on the Teldec label recorded in Amsterdam (Netherlands), with Niklaus Harnoncourt conducting (1993), and Tobias Picker's EMMELINE, on Albany label, a live recording from Santa Fe done in 1996. In 1992, I traveled to Japan, appearing with The Mostly Mozart Festival on tour. I have sung with many of the major symphonies around the U.S. as well, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Houston, Dallas, Cinncinati, Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Buffalo. In March, 2002, I reached 1000 career performances as a professional singer. I feel a great satisfaction at having taken the musical gifts many relatives in previous generations also posessed; (ie. my great-grandfather James T. and my great-uncle John V.) to the professional level I have been able to achieve. I married Sally Wolf in 1983. Sally is also an opera singer who has had an extensive career singing both in North America and Europe. We have sung many times together on the stage in the same opera. We both studied with the renowned opera singer Margaret Harshaw at Indiana University, where we met. My musical tastes are not just limited to classical. I am also a fanatical fan of The Beatles. Have been since 1964, when I saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show. I have collected their memorabilia now for a number of years. Sally and I also enjoy a summer cottage in Bob's Lake, Ontario, Canada (a gift from Sally's parents) where we spend as much free time in the warm months of the year as we can. We often have friends up to visit there." |
